Legal Careers: The Other Meaning of "Bar"

Keith Dailey
If you are not among the 'learned friends', the word lawyer may call to mind underneath the breath implications that the professions are greedy and unethical. It becomes surprising because the legal profession is among the most highly regarded institution, thanks to high education standards.

The Bar Association is an internal regulating organ which continuously scrutinizes the performance and conduct of lawyers hence assuring the public that the profession is living up to the highest expected legal and ethical standards. The Bar Association links a new law student with a lucrative legal career. The student is expected to pass a demanding, taxing and hard exam, known as "The Bar", thus the reason why it is common to see potential lawyers taking few months or a year's off to prepare for the Bar.

Upon successful completion of the Bar, one becomes a member and is mandated to carry out law. As it is not easy to start getting practice for new lawyers, the Bar Association gives advice, provides vital contacts in the legal world and maybe even contacts if the lawyer may require financing to jump start the practice.

The National Bar Association handles large issues such as certification - one can further join local Bar Associations found in every community that tend to be very helpful to members. However, some lawyers undermine the role of local Bar Associations citing that associating with fellow lawyers is asking for unnecessary competition. Contrary, the association aims to benefit everyone.

One of the greatest benefits you will reap to being an active member of your local bar association is networking. You may get to interact with judges you may work with in the courts and even partners or competitors who may give you valuable advice on upcoming cases or lucrative job openings.

Local Bar Associations are known to offer community services to start -up businesses and small business associations. It goes without saying that these are potential clients for the organization. Thus, if you are an active and well known member in your local bar association, you may get reference which translates to expanding your clientele base. You can end up having your dream client who will be the bridge to your success. Nothing comes on a silver platter, so get out there and network at your local bar association.
