A couple of weeks ago here on Gather I had published an article pertaining to a great passion of mine, St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. My purpose in publishing this article was to draw attention to the hospital. It seems a 10 year old girl in the U.K. had an idea to help out a U.K. Childrens Hospice through the efforts of a short movie where she portrayed a man who I think would have been simply delighted to see 70 years after his original.
The movie was a silent Charlie Chaplin style film "Modern Times" where the 10 year old had dressed up like the famous actor as she sung "Smile" which was the theme song for the 1936 classic. The video was running well on JustGiving website where the proceeds were going to the Martin House which is a children's hospice in Wetherby, West Yorkshire, England.
The video came to an immediate halt when it was spotted by the copy right owners of the song, the New York-based Bourne Music Publishers. Now being within their legal rights they requested the video pulled. The young girl unaware of the copyright quickly removed it from the site. This is the kicker though, she was givin permission to continue the video for one year, this permission came from the copyright owners but there was a small fee. Bethany could continue to play the video if her and her family paid a fee of $2000 dollars and an additional $250 dollars each time she performed the song in public. With her savings gone along with her good intentions, she can no longer afford to keep the video running.
This just kinda bums me simply due to the fact that a 10 year old girl took interest in one, helping a very worthy cause, and two taking an interest in an actor and era of movie that is long since left to only a handful of people. I can only say, "way to go Publishers". As I said they were within their legal rights to ask for the video to be pulled, but you would think that due to the cause they could have put away the corporate face for a worthy cause.
