An Education in Nursing Provides Many Opportunities in Professional Advancement
From college students majoring in nursing to registered nurses in clinical practice, the area of legal service continues to proliferate into a new and unique profession for the nursing industry. Understanding the level of expertise, the educational requirements and the areas in which Legal Nurse Experts practice, will ensure a continued growth in this quickly advancing medical and legal program.
Nurses, traditionally, are thought to provide service within a clinical setting. Today, this stereotype is not accurate when describing the extent to which nurses provide service to the public. While still predominately within a clinical setting, the nursing industry has experienced an exodus, of some sort, with many nurses seeking work in the insurance industry, as case management specialists, and within the legal industry, as Legal Nurse Experts. So, what is a Legal Nurse Expert?
Legal Nurse Experts are experienced and educated in a variety of backgrounds. From nursing assistants to licensed vocational nurses to registered nurses, each educational curriculumn and background varies from technical education, associate degrees, bachelor degrees and even master's degrees. As with most professions, the greater the clinical nursing experience, and the greater the legal educational background, the greater the employment opportunities for nurses.
In terms of professional and career advancement, Legal Nurse Experts are generally self employed nurses, connected within a registry of other legal professionals, who are available for consultation to both defense and plaintiff firms in various areas of law. Reviewing clinical practice notes, the affects nursing implication and general healthcare recommendations, Legal Nurse Experts often perform a variety of legal services from a general medical records review to depositions to testifying in trial. Most often called upon, at random, by a law firm, Legal Nurse Experts can choose which cases to accept and the rate charge, per hour or per case. In some cases, the Legal Nurse Expert may even choose to further specialize in an area of medicine such as pediatrics, infusion therapy or geriatrics. The key to success lies in the extent of knowledge and years of clinical experience.
To pursue a career as a Legal Nurse Expert, most law professionals will seek a nurse with a certification to perform in the legal industry. While not considered a college program, nurses seeking legal professional careers, as Legal Nurse Experts, are generally required, by a court of law, to be certified as a legal expert in their career. Fortunately, most Legal Nurse Expert certification programs offer not only certification but concurrent accrual of nursing continuing education credits.
