The band Wham's debut album Fantastic featured as #1 in the UK .It had a series of hit singles that included "Club Tropicana "Young Guns (Go For It!)", " and "Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do)". The album that succeeded it, Make It Big, brought the duo international recognition. They became superstars overnight as they topped the US charts at #1. This album featured the classic "Careless Whisper" along with "Freedom", "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", and""Everything She Wants. The legend also performed associated acts with Elton John, Band Aid, Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston and Mutya Buena. George Michael's phenomenal success with "Careless Whisper" and "A Different Corner" sparked off speculations of break-up between the celebrated duo. They parted ways after the farewell single "The Edge of Heaven."It was performed at London's Wembley Stadium and was a sold-out concert. "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" marked the beginning of his solo career. It raced up the UK Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100 to feature as number one .The song was a duet with Aretha Franklin. In 1987, he released his first solo album Faith. The titular song went on to become one of his most famous songs. The song figured as #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, and as #2 on the UK singles chart. The song that released in October reached the number one slot on December 12 and reigned over that position for several weeks. The classic Faith was recognized with the Diamond certification by the RIAA for its rare feat of having sold 10 million copies in the US. It was followed by the albums Listen without Prejudice.Vol 1 and Older. It had a contemplative streak to it and was not as commercially successful as Faith. The year 1998 saw Michael release Ladies and Gentlemen: The Best of George Michael, a career-inclusive two-disc compilation that comprised of solo material as well as recordings with Wham! , plus a new song "Outside."
Michael mentions in his documentary film A Different Story that success did not bring him adequate happiness, and he rather thought that "there was something wrong in being an idol for millions of teenage girls. The whole Faith process (promotion, videos, tour, awards) left him exhausted, lonely and frustrated." and far from his friends and family. "(Wikpedia)
