Legitimate Companies for Mystery Shoppers to Make Extra Money and Perks

Avoiding the Money Making Pitfalls

Sherri Granato
I can't think of a single person out there that wouldn't like to see their income padded with some type of extra income, but nobody wants to kill themselves doing it. Nor do they want to become a victim of one of the money making pitfalls that are available to anyone willing to be suckered in. With this in mind, deciding on a way to make that extra income can become quite a test for even the most articulate person, so where does one start on such an endeavor?

I have heard of many money making schemes throughout the years that have proven to be costly rather then beneficial when it comes to making a profit from attempting to do some off the wall things. Everything from stuffing envelopes to mystery shopping has been put to the test for people looking at simple ways to earn extra cash without too much effort or investment.

Most of these ideas have been set in place for the brain child of the idea to make a fast buck, rather than the desperate fool who believed them and bought into it. These types of get rich quick schemes are out right scams. You send in your money, and receive nothing more then some useless information on how to place a similar ad so that you can scam people yourself. Submitting to companies that promise you great wealth by stuffing envelopes in the comfort of your own home is a vicious cycle that costs consumers rather than padding their wallets.

On the other hand mystery shoppers can and do make extra money by visiting retail establishments and later submitting a report to the company that has hired them to secretly spy on businesses. The pay is not great, and quite often the person seeking to make extra income is forced to pay for the visits to these stores by purchasing a meal or other item that has been requested by the company, and is reimbursed at a later time for any out of pocket costs during the visit.

Usually the reimbursement comes with a small payment and perks from the firm hired by the establishment so that they can get feedback on how their customer service can be improved. Many businesses rely on mystery shoppers for an objective opinion on improvements needed within the business.

The rewards can vary from free meals and movie rentals to free appliances and gas. Unfortunately many of the companies that hire mystery shoppers want a small fee for you to apply with them, however the better companies require nothing more than your ability to visit various cities and retail stores on their list of clients and properly fill out the required data sheets for each visit.

The bottom line is that if you're looking for a steady source of extra income to make large purchases like a house or an automobile, mystery shopping is not for you. At best it is a way to enjoy a free meal and make a small amount of occasional mad money while giving your input on customer service and other issues that involve the retail industry, and because of the vast amount of applications these companies receive, you may not receive an assignment for weeks or months.

Location is key when it comes to the amount of assignments that you get individually. A mystery shopper that lives in a large area with plenty of retail businesses is more likely to get regular mystery shopping assignments as opposed to someone that lives in the middle of nowhere. However many of these mystery shopping sites will question you as to your willingness to travel, and how far of a distance you are willing to travel to.

Great resource. I usually just pick the assignments that are close to what I'm already doing or have a good payout, otherwise it isn't really worth it sometimes. If you have to eat at a fast food place you don't like for a payout of only $3, it isn't worth it really, but some of the others are, like when you get reimbursed for for nice clothing or get $50 just to observe employees at work. It definitely has its ups and downs. I haven't done any in a while. I might get back into that.
