Lemi Shine Removes Hard Water Spots and Long-Term Mineral Build-Up

Environmentally Safe, Too!

Fern Fischer
Lemi Shine, made by Envirocon Technologies, Inc., is an automatic dishwasher additive used to treat problems caused by hard water. Water that tests at one grain of dissolved minerals per gallon is considered hard. I live in an area of southern Indiana that has particularly hard water: ours tests at 28 grains per gallon. Because the bedrock in the area is limestone, the groundwater is extremely high in dissolved minerals, making it a tough test area for any product that claims to reduce the effects of hard water.

Lemi Shine is a powdered product made from all natural fruit acids, citrus oils and fragrance. It contains no phosphates and is completely environmentally friendly. Lemi Shine is not tested on animals. It is safe for all septic systems. Even the packaging is 100 percent recyclable.

The first time you use Lemi Shine in your dishwasher, the manufacturer recommends an overnight soak. Pour 1/4 cup of Lemi Shine into the bottom of the empty dishwasher and turn it on. Allow the cycle to run for 5 minutes after it fills, then pause the cycle before it drains, and allow to soak overnight. Lemi Shine will remove deposits from the internal parts of the dishwasher. The next morning, restart the cycle and allow the machine to finish.

After the initial soak, use Lemi Shine with every load. Use powdered detergent in the pre-wash cup, and use Lemi Shine in the main wash cup of your dispenser. If you have one dispenser cup, fill it half-and-half with powdered detergent and Lemi Shine. Repeated use of Lemi Shine removes hard water build-up on dishes and glasses, leaving them clear, without spots or streaks. No other product I know of leaves my glassware clear.

Lemi Shine works great on stainless steel, and it puts the shine back on copper-clad pans - no polishing! Although I usually handwash dishes, it's nice to use the dishwasher when company comes, knowing that the dishes will come out sparkling clean.

You can also use Lemi Shine to clean the coffee maker, garbage disposal, faucet fixtures, glass shower doors, and toilet bowl. Specific instructions for these alternate uses are found here.

Envirocon Technologies, Inc. makes other naturally safe cleaning products that can be purchased online, or use the website's locator to find a store near you. I buy Lemi Shine at the local WalMart where it is priced at $3.97. You can buy a 5-gallon bucket of Lemi Shine and any of the company's other products through the manufacturer's website.

Manufacturer's Caution: Lemi Shine should not be used on painted glassware or dishes, aluminum, fine china, or enamel coated items. Do not use it with non-stick coated cookware or removable stove top components. Do not mix with liquid bleach.

Sounds like a super product. Removing lime and hard water deposits can damage the fixtures as much as leaving them there.

Where I am, the water is soft. But I expect to move to Nebraska. I'll doubtless need information such as this.

I have hard water, and I add apple cider vinegar to dishwasher soap. Sounds like this would do more.

I'm always amazed at the cleaning power of citrus in general, and this sounds like a good product, thanks.
