According to Aint It Not Cool News, the director is Len Wiseman. Wiseman just recently directed the 4th film in the Die Hard series entitled "Live Free or Die Hard". The film was a hit at the box office and was well received by both critics and fans.
Len Wiseman began his career as a property assistant on such films as Stargate and Independence Day. He went on to make his film directing debut with Underworld and later its sequel, Underworld: Evolution. He is married to the main star of both films, Kate Beckinsale.
Replacing Kurt Russell as the anti-hero Snake Plissken will be "300" star Gerald Butler. So far Butler is the only role that has been cast.
The original film was written by John Carpenter and Nick Castle. The remake is written by Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down).
It's unknown when the film will start filming but it's rumored to be released sometime in 2009.
The original film, released in 1981 was about New York being an island prison where criminals run free and are cut off from civilization. Air Force one however is flying overhead when the pilot loses control, and the President is lost in Manhattan while he is carrying the launch codes for the U.S.A's missile defense system. The government has no choice but to send in Snake Plissken: A former Green Berret on his way to serve a life sentence in jail, to rescue the president.
A sequel, entitled "Escape from L.A." followed in 1996.
John Carpenter will executive produce and New Line Cinema will distribute.

Post a CommentThey have good people working on this one, but I still don't think it should be remade. I'd rather see Russell and Carpenter do another one. "Escape From Earth" perhaps. Thanks for the article!
Why would anybody remake this film? It really boggles the mind. Hollywood is hurting so bad for new ideas that it just recycles the old ones. What a shame. And what ever happened to Kurt Russell? Remember when he used to kick ass?
I can understand why their remaking this. Face it, Hollywood thinks about the general audience and not us fans and I don't think the general audience these days know who Snake is.
After "live free or die hard" I have total faith in Wiseman. This is wait and see for me but I'm hoping for the best. I love the original and all but the action sequences weren't all that good, decent but not very good. I'm hoping Wiseman goes crazy with the action at least.
Why fix what's not broken?
Wiseman is a good director & John Carpenter is executive producer - I have confidence in this in at least it has the potential for something very cool. Gerald Butler is an OK actor I suppose - but I'd not have cast him as Snake - that is my one major concern - but hey maybe he'll come through and deliver. Good article!
