Lennon Fans Still Hating on Yoko Ono

Valerie Ferrari
Beatles' fans latest reason to hate on their favorite scapegoat, Yoko Ono, is the French automobile maker Citroen's commercial containing footage of John Lennon speaking about being original and not revisiting the past. (See it here). To use that as another reason to revile Yoko is pathetically ironic when you think about how long this grudge has gone on.

A lot of kids grow up with divorced parents who can't stand each other and the extended families of each take sides, saying twisted horrid things. Getting even, being right , blaming - - it's all way more important than giving "peace a chance." There are the nasty divorces and bitter custody battles and even the post-divorce drama that gets ugly in public, like Alex Baldwin and Kim Basinger. But not that many people get to deal with the kind of undying hatred that John Lennon's second wife, Yoko Ono, has inspired. Death threats, blame for the breakup of the Beatles, blame for "ruining" John Lennon. Reviling Yoko is a popular pastime. There are 1,282 members of the Facebook group: "Damn you, Yoko Ono, you broke up the Beatles -- How do you sleep at night?" I don't even want to know how many members there are in the group whose title says Yoko should have died instead of John Lennon. I've even seen a comment online where a Lennon fan claimed if it wasn't for Yoko, John wouldn't have moved to America and would still be alive! Wouldn't it be just as crazy to blame Mr. and Mrs. Chapman for having wacko Mark, or J.D. Salinger for writing Catcher in the Rye? No, let's blame Yoko.

NME reports that on March 2nd, the couples' son, Sean, "defended" his mother on Twitter, writing: "She did not do it for money. Has to do w hoping to keep dad in public consciousness. No new LPs, so TV ad is exposure to young." Sean Lennon later tweeted that he "realized why people are mad, but the intention was not financial." He said the intention was to keep his father "out there in the world." I don't know if that is so much defending his mother as just trying to put a stop to the vicious 'money-grubbing' gossip that has also always surrounded Yoko.

Personally, I've always found the Yoko Ono haters a little bizarre and was never really sure what to chalk it up to. Yoko herself has said part of it was her being a woman and a Japanese woman at that. Part of it was the breakup of John's first marriage with Cynthia, but that was mere collateral damage when compared to the breakup of the Beatles. While most women would sympathize with Cynthia Lennon's reasons for disliking Yoko Ono, even she has theorized that John had a "mother complex" and sought out dominant women in her 2006 book, John. Yeah, so what? No one wants to hear about the complexes when people they really know get mixed up in dysfunctional and even abusive relationships.

The bottom line here is that John Lennon chose to be with Yoko. If she was controlling him, maybe he wanted it that way. Maybe he loved Yoko. I like to think he still does.

You're gonna hater her more when the truth comes out about John Lennon. He has a lovechild daughter that Ono hid her inheritance that John left the daughter. She got Michael Jackson to help hide it so she put him as publisher on the Beatle catalogue. Jacko made half royalties on all Beatles songs while the daughter's inheritance stayed hidden. This is Pearl harbor waiting to happen again.

I don't hate Yoko, but I dislike her music and art. Just not my bag. The Beatles were probably going to break up anyway, and they made plenty of music. at least we are spared the sight of them rocking into their 60s, 70s, and beyond, still trying to hold our hands.

    Excellent article, Valerie. Well done!

Definitely true. I never really knew of the reasons why people hated her so much. It's pointless, really, to hate. As one of my fav independent singers would say and as what John would have surely agreed with, "You have to to be carefully to taught to hate." It's not just something that comes naturally. It's something that is taught and society has taught itself to hate Yoko for so long. Come on, it's not like The lady Roe from Roe v Wade who had fought for abortion rights only to turn around as be pro-life (not that it's a bad thing to be pro-life). She made a lot of women mad bc she fought for our rights and then slapped us in the face. What Yoko did is minor compared to that.

You've got to think you're very important to hate on people you don't even consort with...

I've never understood this animosity, not cared. Interesting digging to find that some still waste their time pursuing the idea's promostion. (I'm busy hating on Harriet Nelson myself - for messing up Ozzie's band with those kids and that dumb show.)

Strange how some feel their opinions are so important in other people's lives.

A few years ago I saw a bumper sticker that stated "Still pissed at Yoko". I prefer to think off all the great music he left us. Time to move on, people.
