Lenny's: Best Denver Sub Shop

The Denver Sub Shop

Jaipi Sixbear
As a former New Yorker, subs are very important to me. When I first moved to Denver the quest for a decent sub shop started and it ended a few weeks ago when Lenny's sub shop moved into our neighborhood. Before I tell you about Lenny's though, I have to tell you about a couple other sub shop venues, as well as one that comes close to being great.

First on the list, Subway. Where do I begin? The bread is dry. The "cheese" is processed. Cheese is very important. You ask for double cheese and get 4 slices of plastic. In a New York sub shop I used to frequent, a cheese half sub (8 inches long) had 16 slices of the most buttery melt in your mouth provolone you can imagine. Thank the sub shop Gods! I have found Lenny's!

Cheese is very important to me as I am vegetarian and that is the highlight of my sandwich. I have seen the meat they use as well and even though I don't eat meat, my family does and this is not quality meat. Like the cheese, the meat is stingy at subway. Subway does not have hot pepper relish, the staple of every sub shop back East and what really brings those flavors together. Thank the sub shop Gods! I have Found Lenny's!

Quiznos advertises New York style subs, but is so far off the mark you need a map. Once again this sub shop is stingy on the cheese and meat. They have no red pepper relish and they heat up their sandwiches after putting on lettuce tomato, mayo. The lettuce wilts, the mayo turns and it tastes like the sandwich left in the fridge for days after re-heating. If you choose not to heat it up, it's also quite unimpressive. Blech! Thank the sub shop Gods! I have found Lenny's!

Spicy Pickle is not a New York style sub shop but at least they are very generous with their meat and cheese, which are a quality brand. Until I found Lenny's this was as close to NY as I could find. Problem here is once again dry bread. Add to that the fancy condiments which have no place in a real sub shop. No oregano, Parmesan, or red pepper relish. They use balsamic vinegar (gag me, I hate this crap). Thank the sub shop Gods! I have found Lenny's!

Lenny's sub shop moved into our neighborhood about a month ago and there are lines out the door every time we go. The people are friendly and face forward in service. They are not fake in any way and genuinely happy to be working at Lenny's sub shop. They make sure you get exactly what you want on your Lenny's sub. They bus all the tables and stop by at least once while you are eating to ask how your sub is. If you need a refill they get it for you. If your sub is not perfect, they fix it. Thank the sub shop Gods! I have found Lenny's!

Now let's talk about the subs at Lenny's sub shop. There is a pound of meat on every sub and it is high quality meat. There is a half pound of cheese on every cold sub and it is high quality cheese. If you ask to double the cheese, it is generously doubled, none of this two more triangles crap. All the ingredients are really fresh, not just advertised that way. The lettuce and onions are crisp. The tomatoes are red, not pale and limp. Thank the sub shop Gods! I have found Lenny's!

The bread is to die for, crunchy on the outside, chewy and bursting with fresh flavor on the inside. All the veggies are free, pick whatever you want and no extra charges for extra items. Oh, yes, and finally my delicious and much missed hot pepper relish! If you have never had this you must try it. It is hot but not too hot and just makes the sub so wonderfully New York! Lenny' sub shop also sells this delightful stuff in jars at a reasonable cost. Thank the sub shop Gods! I have found Lenny's!

The hot subs at Lenny's include Italian meatball (very Italian), Philly Cheesesteak (very authentic tasting), Grilled Chicken Philly, and a footlong NY style hot dog. My boyfriend says the Italian meatball and Philly Cheesesteak are like a wonderful nothing he has tasted in his life duo. He bought a whole Italian Meatball sub one day, with the intention of eating half later. They are gargantuan! He couldn't wait and ate the whole thing at once! Thank the sub shop Gods! I have found Lenny's!

Lenny's sub shop subs are not cheap, but they are worth every penny. Regulars are around four or five dollars and larges are around ten dollars. Lenny's also has fountain drinks, lemonade, and teas. A meal deal comes with a choice of giant delicious cookie or chips (they have their own brand in a variety of flavors), and a drink. This meal deal adds two dollars to your bill.

To find a Lenny's near you go here. Then you too can say, "Thank the sub shop Gods! I have found Lenny's!".

Lenny's lets you make your sandwich to order in line, just like Subway, except they also slice your meat fresh right in front of you. There are many Lenny's Sub Shop locations around the country now and many more to open - YUM!

I just had Lenny's for the first time when my workplace had them cater a meal. It WAS yummy. The cookies and sweet tea were great, too. Good review!

Well, I'm envious, jp., but if I ever get to Denver, I'll go w/ you to Lenny's! But I gotta say, I still like the little tuna half subs at Subway. I'm like Meg Ryan in Harry Met Sally when it comes to my order. So at Subway, I can stand there & tell them to put the mayo on both top AND bottom halves of the bun , now tuna on the bottom half, mash a FEW bits of onion into it, some tomato slices on that, a squirt of mayo to make the spinach leaves stick to the top of the tomato, put the top on & cut it in half, please. And they DO! And because I'm standing there, I can see no one spit on it out of annoyance. Priceless. ; )

i love a good sub, they are non-existent around here unless you make them at home.

oh wow, does this sound like a great place for a sub...all we have around here are those franchise joints, and boy do I ever miss eating those "hogies" I remember from my childhood :)
