Leo's Coney Island Restaurant Review in Dearborn Heights, Michigan

Deborah Kolka
As Leo's Coney Islands begin adding locations in the area, one of the older locations stands out among the rest in food taste, quantity and service. The Dearborn Heights location of the chain, is located on Ford Road, between Beech Daly and Inksters, in the Heights Shopping Plaza. This restaurant services the normal menu you would come to expect at a coney island and also a few menu items you may not expect.

Leo's Coney Island serves breakfast all day, anytime and offers three regular breakfast specials until 11:00 AM each day. Two eggs, any style with a choice of 4 strips bacon or sausage links and toast is only $2.75. Want to add hash browns to that special? It's only an addition $1.00 charge. The menu also offers 18 different omelette choices and if you like Sausage Gravy and Biscuits, you will probably love Leos version priced at $3.75 for a regular and $2.50 for a half order.
While Leo's coney dogs are one of the best in the area, I visit the Dearborn Heights Leos for their Chicken Gyro Dinner. The dinner includes the gyro, well loaded with tender grilled chicken topped with onions and tomato. What makes it tops among the other restaurants gyros is Leos Tzadziki Sauce. I would certainly like to know what makes this Leos location Tzadsiki sauce taste so much better than the others, it is definitely heads above the rest and compliments the gyros juicy grilled chicken. The Chicken Gyro Dinner also comes with a small Greek salad and your choice of fries or rice. The Greek dressing at Leos is wonderful and they also offer a lite version, You can also purchase their private label dressing at a Leos restaurant to use at home. When ordering my chicken gyro dinner, I always choose the rice as my side. Although it states on the menu that Leos serves Uncle Ben's Rice, I have yet to be able to make Uncle Ben's rice that resembles anything close to Leos version. The rice comes to the table in a heaping bowl, it is lightly seasoned and is a delicious accompaniment to the gyro. During my last visit, I dined with my mother who loves Leo's bean soup, when asked what makes Leos soup better than her own, she said " Leo's soup is thick and rich and has a great taste, I haven't been able to duplicate it at home." Soup, at Leos, is priced at $1.90 a cup and $2.50 a bowl. The Chicken gyro Dinner is a bargain at $7.90, considering the taste and the amount of food you receive.

Leo's Coney Island also offers 9 dessert choices. The Baklava, is one of my favorites, dripping with honey and filled with nuts in a light pastry and priced at $1.25 for a generous slice. Pie, sundaes, cheesecake and ice cream are also available. If you like rice pudding, try Leo's, it is priced at $1.75 for a cup and $2.15 for a bowl.

The wait staff at the Dearborn Heights location is always on their toes and are cheerful. I would caution, though, anyone visiting this Leo's on a Sunday morning or early afternoon. This particular Leo's is very busy on Sunday mornings after church and usually the owner/manager is working. I have witness him being a bit overly concerned with how long his patrons are taking to consume their food and likes to get people in and out quickly to the point of making you uncomfortable if you like to sip your coffee after eating your meal.

As for other Leo's Coney Island locations, the food varies in taste and portion sizes but, with the exception of the Downtown Detroit location, the taste differences are not that noticeable. The Downtown Detroit Location, located in Comerica Park, has Tzadsiki sauce that I would not recommend, in fact, the only thing I can recommend to eat at the Downtown Detroit location is the original Leo's Coney Dog and fries. Everything else I have tried at the downtown location, tastes nothing like the other Leo's locations food.
