Lesbian Cool

What Makes a Lesbian Cool?

Ulla Kelly
Cool ... lesbian cool. To me, that concept means two things; being "cool" within the lesbian scene and lesbians being "cool" as far as the rest of humanity is concerned. We (us lesbians) seem to be riding a media high at the moment. Yup, we're cool again. The recent "I Kissed a Girl and I Liked It" song by Katy Perry for example. A song like that becomes a hit around the time straight women kiss other straight women in nightclubs to turn their boyfriends on. But enough of hetero-fantasies and heteroflexible women, what's cool on Planet Lesbian?

Cool is all about attitude. It doesn't matter what you look like or what you're into, you can make it cool just by adding a swagger to it and maybe some jargon too. The mullet? It's IRONIC, darling! The wallet-chain is by Diesel and the toolbelt is Versace.

Lesbian haircuts. Back in the day, friends and I used to joke around on an online forum, that there were 12 sacred lesbian hairstyles. We never bothered to define them, but I'm sure you know what I mean. There was "the london lesbian" mostly shaved head with a little tuft of a finge left in front. There was "prisoner cell block H" which was just, well ... rather bald. There was "the bed head" look, which is one of my personal favourites, since it requires minimal effort and maintenance. Some lesbians have long hair too!

I think sometimes that much of the world assumes all lesbians are devoid of style, that they just shave their heads, put on a pair of dungarees and really don't care what they look like. Well, you get people like that in all sectors of society.

Shoes! Straight women absolutely do not have the monopoly on the shoe fetish, neither do femmes. Even us boi dykes enjoy shoes. Personally, I've gone through brands over the years; Docs, Cats, Wehrmacht, New Rock, Blundstone ... I'm a total designer dyke. On the odd occasion I'm not wearing dykeboots, I wear old skool sneakers like Converse.

Jeans? They gotta be hipsters, they gotta be bootlegs and the denim needs to be the kind that wears and rips well with age, because old jeans are cool jeans. Shirts are either retro-funky t-shirts, or smart men's button down shirts.

My idea of the ultimate lesbian cool formal outfit is ripped jeans, boots or sneakers, a smart white linen shirt and a suit jacket. I have one I adore above all others; it's black, but has some grunge trim and white stencil work on the back.

Cool is as cool does though - just strut. It'll be cool.
