Behavioral Objective:

1. The students will be able to identify the difference between Present, Past, and Future Tense Verbs.

2. The students will be able to have a discussion about the story "The Keeping Quilt" from Textbook High Point - Level B Advanced

Aim: 1. What is the difference between a present tense verb, a past tense verb, and a future tense verb?

2. Can you make predictions?

Motivation: Turn to page 76 in your textbook.

1. Read the title and the introduction.

2. Look at the pictures and think about how they relate to the title.

3. Predict what you think will happen in the story.

4. Fill in the Preview and Predict chart.

Procedure:

Students will come into the room and start the Do Now activity already written on the board. I will also be handing out an activity sheet as the students walk into the room to complete. This is the Grammar component of the lesson.
Next will be the motivational activity (see top of page).
I will read the vocabulary words on pg. 76. I will pass out the vocabulary words and definitions.
I will call on volunteers to read the story "The Keeping Quilt".
I will divide the class into groups of two. They will answer the questions from pg. 84 Think It Over #'s 1-4.

Conclusions - Why is the quilt important? Why do you think it is called the "keeping quilt"?
Inference - The men and women celebrated separately at Anna's wedding. How did this custom change over time? Why do you think it changed?
Author's Purpose - Why do you think the author wrote this story?
Personal Experience - What tradition would you like to start with your family? How would this tradition give your family members a sense of belonging?

Vocabulary: apron, babushka, bouquet, bride, celebrate, engaged, husband, nightdress, quilt, tablecloth, wedding huppa

Materials: blackboard, chalk, pen, paper, textbook, practice book, activity sheets

Homework: High Point Practice Book pgs. 32-37

Higher Order Questions: Please refer to procedure #5

Follow - Up: To read the story "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton. The students will be able to identify the similarities between both stories.

ELA Standard # 2 - Students will read, write, listen, and speak in English for literary response, enjoyment, and expression.

READ - The students will read the story, the vocabulary words, questions during group work, and responses to the questions.

WRITE - The students will write answers to questions, Do Now and Motivational activities.

LISTEN - The students will listen to the teacher read the vocabulary words and to each other while reading the story and responses to questions.

SPEAK - The students will recite the vocabulary word list, answers to Do Now, Motivational activity and questions.

Overall :
* Students will be called to the board and called on to participate in class discussion.
* Directions will be given both verbally and written.
* Higher order questions will be asked to promote student interaction in the lesson.
* The needs of the children will be addressed throughout the lesson.
