Lessons from America's Next Top Model: What Tyra and Her Girls Can Teach Us

Amanda Herron
The modeling reality show, America's Next Top Model, may have debatable results for its chosen winners, but there are still many things we can learn from Tyra Banks, Miss. J. Alexander, Mr. Jay Manuel, Twiggy, Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker and the dozens of girls who have through the famous America's Next Top Model house with high hopes.

1. Less is more - part one.

It may go without saying that a modeling competition would include nude photo shoots, yet every season there is that contestant who breaks into surprised tears at the thought of having to pose nude. Read the fine print and do your research before jumping headlong into something. By now, Cycle 8, every contestant should be prepared for a nude shoot, emotionally and physically. On a different note, strive to be open-minded and take the risk. The America's Next Top Model nude shoots never actually show nudity in the final images and are always tasteful and very coutre.

2. Less is more - part two.

The first thing Tyra Banks does to almost every model during the judging panel is critique their outfit. Many of the girls try too hard to prove their fashion savvy with overkill on earrings, shoes, tops, etc. In this case, "less is more" does not necessarily mean fewer clothing. Many of the critiques involve Tyra asking the girls not to dress so, well, hoochy. Overkill on mini-skirts or cleavage-busting tops makes the girls look less like models and more like Maxim girls, which Tyra will be the first to remind viewers are not always the same creature. Be simple, and let your natural beauty reach out before the loud outfit and accessories.

3. You are a canvas.

Style is important. The entire fashion industry is built on that. However, for a model, Nigel Barker and Tyra Banks consistently remind the girl they should present themselves as a canvas. A simple tank top, jeans and heels show off the classic feminine lines and allow everyone to revel in your natural beauty and personality. Apply this to your daily style by toning down your accessories or clothing. Got an awesome pair of earrings? Killer bag? Hot stilettos? Choose one awesome accessory and let the rest of your outfit be simple and compliment it.

4. Be open to critiques.

You're fierce. You're fabulous. You know this and you assume everyone else does also. But even the fiercest, most fabulous personalities make the occasional fashion or social faux paus. Even Miss Tyra Banks, Victoria's Secret fashion goddess herself, has graced the worst dressed pages of America's fashion magazines. To stay on top as a Top Model, you've got to be willing to admit when you've messed up or gone a little too far. That way the audience doesn't get worn out on your self-confidence too early in the game.
