Lethargy Thoughts

Ali Gadelhak
"Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired" (Jules Renard). Ever since the beginning of time, man has been on a constant search to find new ways to be lazy. From the invention of the telephone, to the creation of the car, man has been on a desperate hunt for new ways to be lazy. However, many people do not know that it is proven through time, science, and my personal experience that being lazy is not beneficial.

Being lazy can be unhealthy for: one's government, physical health, and social status. Cuba is a country in which being lazy is not permitted. Cuba is also a country that runs on a communist government. The idea of a communist government is that the citizens are all responsible for giving personal labor to society. In this type of government, all citizens are equal; they get paid the same amount, they work the same amount of time, and they receive their equal share of the benefits. One of such benefits is great public schooling. It is a widely known fact that Cuba has the highest literacy rate in the world, ninety-eight percent. It has been proven that communist based governments usually fail. This is primarily because most human beings are lazy. By us being lazy, we are missing out on all the benefits that these countries have.Laziness has contributed to our modern day society in the form of welfare and unemployment checks. Those who leech from the government for aid but are fully capable of working are truly lazy. Those lechers add to our economic misfortune. So being lazy also contributes to the downfall of our economy. When someone tries to picture "lazy" in their minds, the first thing that pops-up is the silhouette of Homer Simpson. Laziness has a negative impact on one's health. Laziness promotes such habits like lack of exercise, to the mind and body.

In one study it was suggested that people who work two jobs -who are constantly running from place to place- are thirty-two percent less likely to be overweight than those who work one job.
This indolence also rots the mind by sending it false signals. Every time you act lazy, you are training your brain to work less. The old aphorism is factual, "the more your work, the more you want to work". Laziness has not benefited me in any way; it has adversely affected my life. I do recall a time in my life in which I thought I could beat the system by turning in a paper which I had previously turned in for a different class. I got caught. My foolishness cost me hours of my precious sleep and the trust of my teacher. Not only that, I felt humiliated and ashamed of what I committed. My own laziness was the plight of my downfall. In brief, laziness degrades the mind, spirit, and physical body in us all. Laziness brings out the worst in us. It demolishes our society. And most importantly, it weakens our bond with the real world and a world of fantasy. According to a Norwegian proverb, "the lazier a man is, the more he plans to do tomorrow".
