The thing that struck me odd about the Grand Opening was that this particular business has been located in our little town for probably ten years or more. I can't remember for sure, but I feel like they had a Grand Opening at that time.
So needless to say, I was a little puzzled about how you open again so grandly after such a long time. Some cute little thing in the store explained it to me, "We did some remodeling."
The crazy thing is that this is the second time this month that this has happened to me. I went by a branch of the bank where I've been doing business for fifteen years, and they were set up outside cooking burgers and hotdogs, with a full spread of drinks and other snacks. "We're so glad you came by to help us celebrate our Grand Opening."
My response was, "You're a bank, for Pete's sake, a place that I've been letting take care of my money for years. How can you just now be having a Grand Opening? This is what you do with all that interest you're making off my money?"
Their explanation was that they, too, had remodeled. Actually, I saw where they had taken a piece of Plexiglas down from the cashier counter. I guess you could consider that a remodel. I didn't really care because I took my burger, drink and accompanying snacks and left. That's more than I got at the cell phone store.
As I was driving home, though, it occurred to me that we should all do that in our lives from time to time. When we change something for the better, or maybe feel that we've accomplished some goal for ourselves, we should announce to others that we're having a Grand Opening and allow others to celebrate with us.
Lose that weight you've been working so hard, quit a bad habit, changing your attitude about something, have a new cause that you're excited about, then I say have yourself a Grand Opening. You've sort of remodeled yourself. Maybe it's not such a bad idea. You wouldn't have to cook burgers and hotdogs, although it might be a good way to get people's attention, because we've all heard the old saying, "The quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach." Well, I find that works pretty well for women, too.
