Start out with the prefold diaper flat and under your baby. The edge of the diaper should end where you want the waist of the diaper to end.
Now fold one side of the diaper over the middle. Do the same with the other side. The diaper should now be in thirds.
Take the part of the diaper you just folded and pull it up between your baby's legs so that it is now in front of your baby's private area.
Now you can fold the front down towards the inside if you're working with a small baby such as a newborn. If you're working with a bigger baby, unfold the part of the diaper you just pulled up between your baby's legs.
Next pull the front of the diaper so that it is flat against your baby and going around his or her waist.
Pull the edges of the part of the diaper that's behind your baby towards the front. Pull them tight over the front part of the diaper and pin in to place.
You should have a good, tight fit in the thighs and in the waist. If you don't, unpin the diaper and try pinning it again, this time pulling the fabric tighter prior to pinning it. Getting the sides pinned evenly is also crucial to the newspaper fold. If you have followed these instructions successfully, you should have a nice, neat newspaper fold now. If you're looking for something a little easier, try the twist fold.
