Let's Get Together: Melting the Diverse Population

Denise
It seems like in this fallen planet as history has told that we find it hard to accept diversity due to differences. These differences are usually in language, food and customs that make us all unique. Perhaps, our customs are the products of our individual religious beliefs or law practices that set us apart as extreme or lenient. Yet, basically we are all the same in the fact that we all have skin, most have hair, eyes, nose, teeth, feet, and hopefully a brain. Moreover, we all have to eat, sleep, drink water, do work and bathe.

In addition, we all have emotions, illness, disease, halitosis at times, responsibilities, the same body form inside and out , reproductive systems, and will eventually die. In all the important things we will find that we are not truly different at all which makes all the hoopla really pathetic. That said, this is a new year that is on it's way out, and we have a lot of work to do. Actually , it seems that some people have already been doing this naturally. Meaning, the work that is to be done it to melt the pot in as many ways as possible without destroying each of the individual flavors. One way to do this is to utilize the neighborhood by having a celebration of some kind where all the different ethnic communities around you can participate. Perhaps using a community center would be a good way for people to meet, have a pot luck and get to know everyone else.

It seems that in the workplace there isn't a strong representation of the diverse population due to lack of education, or entrepreneurship. It will be more inviting to have more than one representation of an ethnic group present, so the others won't undoubtedly leave the person alone due to the force of habit. One way to do this is to begin by reading about different ethnic groups. You can also search online for products from various countries to give you an idea of how to approach them. Look for those things that many of us have in common such as basket weaving, crocheting, quilting, painting, carving, baking, arts or sports.

Perhaps you could live in a community of housewives who like to make quilts, and there are ethnic people who like to do that. Voila! There is one way to bring people together despite appearance and cultural differences which are trivial. Commonality should be the name of the real game of life in this world. In other words, wherever you go there will always be a variety even in your own kind, but common goals are more important in the long run. In fact, you may be shy, but you still don't want to be left out unless you are a hermit. Social settings provide great opportunities to meet and greet.

Professional fathers may want to get together with the men in the neighborhood for male bonding. Female teens and tweens can get together by doing their own special project in a sewing party to make clothing, pillows, rag dolls or stuffed animals. Male teens and tweens can get together to do their own wood projects, play sports, build trucks, play or create video games. The possibilities are endless. There can be cookie swap parties, pot luck parties, neighborhood watch parties and ice cream socials. It is possible that we may have some differences, but we're really not that different at all.
