Let's Do the Traditional Fold!

How to Fold Receiving Blankets in to Cloth Diapers

J. McDaniel
Receiving blankets fold in to great cloth diapers. They're absorbent, cute, and almost every mother has plenty on hand. Many women have heard of using receiving blankets as cloth diapers, but don't know how to actually do it. Knowing how to fold a receiving blanket in to a cloth diaper is a valuable skill that can come in handy when you've ran out of your preferred type of diaper.

Today we're going to learn the traditional fold. This fold features three layers of fabric with six layers of fabric in the front half. The extra three layers in the front half add absorbency where it's needed most for both boys and girls.

Start off with your receiving blanket laying flat. Keep the printed side facing down if you want it to be showing on the finished diaper.

Now fold the top side over so that it meets the middle of the blanket. Make sure there are no wrinkles and that the fold itself is even and straight.

Now let's fold the right side over so that it covers one third of the blanket. Again, make sure there are no wrinkles and that the fold itself is even and straight.

Now we can fold the other side of the blanket over. We want this side to fold where the edge of the right side ends. Check the blanket again, making sure that there are no wrinkles and that the fold itself is even and straight.

You're now ready to put your newly made cloth diaper on your baby! With this fold, you can diaper your baby the same way you would with a prefold diaper. If you need some where to start I highly recommend the newspaper fold . This fold features a poop pouch and a good fit around the thighs. While it's lacking in extra absorbency with prefold diapers, that won't be a problem for you - you've got six layers of fabric in the front half of your diaper, thanks to using a folded receiving blanket for a cloth diaper!
