Letter of Apology to Mother Earth

Will You Ever Forgive Me?

Deb Martin-Webster
Dear Earth,
First, I would like to send my deepest apology to you for the horrible things I've done to you in the past. I've wasted your water, littered your streets and highways, built developments on your lush green farmlands, polluted your beautiful blue skies with clouds of poison. Will you ever forgive me? Will you allow me to redeem my inappropriate behavior? Will you continue to allow me and my children to live with you? I hope it's not too late to convince you that I've changed.

I understand your delicate ozone layer may be injured to the point of disrepair . . . will you ever forgive me? I've contributed to the overfishing of your majestic oceans and now take only what I can eat . . . will you ever forgive me? We now live in a smaller home to lessen our need for home fuel consumption . . . will you ever forgive me? I shop wiser, I choose recycled products, I recycle what I can and pass these new learned skills on to my children and grandchildren . . . will you ever forgive me? I know it may not be enough to mend your broken heart. And some still deny we have hurt you beyond repair. I will continue to remind others to protect you and beg your forgiveness; to be thoughtful of your generosity and never take advantage of your kindness in the future.

I totally understand if you are still angry. Your rumblings have caused much destruction all over your lovely body. To you they may be insignificant, but to us they are devastating. Massive earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes and floods; these events I'm sure are your way of telling us you are hurting. I want to help you. I want you to feel better. I want to see that beautiful rainbow smile again. I want you to trust me again.

In honor of your special day I planted a butterfly garden. To to replenish the bee population I've planted an assortment of fragrant flowers. I've enriched our soil with natural fertilizer . . . thanks to our horses.

In closing, I know I've said it before however this time I will pledge my life long commitment to make you proud; to create a better place for your humble residents. I will restore instead of rebuild, reuse instead of repurchase, respect instead of refute, recuperate and relive. I pray it's not too late.

Sincerely yours,
Humanity

This is beautiful. I cringe when I think of the things I did that harmed the earth.

Good job. Nice to involve your granddaughter, their generation will take this more seriously than our generation ever did.

Thank you everyone and yes it is my hope that we all symbolically sign it as a promise letter. The letter concept came to me as we (my 8 year old granddaughter and me] got our vegetable beds ready for planting. BTW, she is the artist of the cover art! Thank you Sammie! :)
