Arts and Crafts with the Letter K
Cut diamond shaped out of construction paper to make kites. Decorate the kites with markers and crayons and add streamers for a tail. Hang the kites from the ceiling.
Use house and car keys to make crayon rubbings. Place a key under a piece of blank piece of computer paper and rub a crayon over the top of it to see a key imprint appear. Experiment with different patterns of keys and different color combinations.
Science Activities for the Letter K
Learn about animals that are native to Australia, including the kangaroo, koala bear, and kookaburra. Let the kids practice jumping like a kangaroo on their way outside for play time.
Provide a variety of kaleidoscopes for the children to play with. Ask the class if the colors are brighter if the kaleidoscope is pointed toward the window or the floor?
Math Activity for the Letter K
Give each child a picture of a koala bear, kangaroo, or kitten to color. Cut the picture into 8 to 12 pieces to make a puzzle. Let each child practice putting the puzzle together, then put the puzzle into an envelope to take home and play later.
Active Play Activities for the Letter K
Play Keep it Up with a balloon. Fill a balloon with air and tie the ends. Challenge the class to keep the balloon off of the ground for as long as possible. Use a stopwatch to keep track of the class record. Encourage the class to try to break their previous record each time they play.
Invite a karate instructor or student to teach two or three basic karate moves or stances, or to simply give a demonstration.
Walk to a grassy field or park and take turns flying kites.
Walk to the local pet store to visit the kittens.
Snack Time for the Letter K
Make kangaroo pockets out of whole wheat pita bread. Give each child a half of a pita and teach them how to open the pocket. Provide cheese and fruit slices to fill the pita with.
You can also serve rice krispies or anything that ketchup can be dipped into.
