Make pet rocks by painting rocks and adding googlie eyes and ribbon for hair. Fill out a birth certificate for each rock with a name and their birthday.

Early Math and Science Activity for the Letter R

Prop up piece of board onto several large, sturdy wooden blocks to make a ramp. Have a variety of objects to roll down the ramp, such as cars, rocks, balls, and balloons. Let the kids guess which objects will roll down the ramp the fastest or furthest.

Active Play Activities for the Letter R

Play Ring Around the Rosies or have a variety of races where the children run forward and backwards, jump, roll, hop, and crawl to the finish line. Have a relay race around the play yard. Let the children roll hula hoops as far as they can before they fall down. Place a rope on the ground and let the kids pretend that they are tightrope walkers. Show them how to hold their arms out for balance.

Early Literacy Activities for the Letter R

Play a rhyming game. Say a word like "ball" and let the next child think or a word that rhymes with ball, such as fall or wall. Go around the circle until you run out of words then go on to another word like "cat." Read a Dr. Seuss book before or after the rhyming game and point out some of the rhymes that he uses.

Make up simple riddles for the class to figure out, such as "I am a very large animal with four legs. I also take my trunk with me wherever I go" Answer: an elephant!

Snack Time for the Letter R

Make rainbowJello during the week. Every day, let the kids help you add a layer different color of Jello to clear plastic cups with their names written on them (let the Jello cool slightly before adding). At the end of the week, they will have a colorful treat.

Make rice bowls. Give each child a scoop of rice and let them add their own toppings: pieces cooked ham or chicken, cut up steamed broccoli and carrots, teriyaki sauce, and soy sauce.
