Arts and Crafts Activities for the Letter S

Make a sky picture by gluing pieces of cotton for clouds and yellow circles for suns onto pieces of light blue construction paper. Or make a night sky with star sticker and a yellow crescent moon.

Make a mini snow globe by filling the bottom of a clean baby food jar with white glitter. Fill the jar carefully with water and glue the lid to the top. Shake up the jar for a snowstorm.

Cut surfboard shapes out of large pieces of construction paper. Provide stickers and markers or paint for decorating the boards. When each child finishes his or her surfboard, cover it with contact paper and then let them practice surfing while listening to a Beach Boys song, such as Surfin' Safari or Surfing USA.

Early Math and Science Activities for the Letter S

Put drops of peppermint, vanilla, coconut, strawberry, and lemon extract on cotton balls. Place the cotton balls into plastic containers with lids and let the children use their sense of smell to guess what the scents are.

Place heavy objects such as blocks onto pieces of construction paper and set them out in the sun. After a few hours, pick up the objects to see the "sun prints" left on the paper.

Have a shape scavenger hunt. Pass out index cards with outlines of different shapes on them. Let the children find something that is that shape and bring it back to you. Have them return the objects, the shuffle the cards and play the game again.

Active Play Activities for the Letter S

Play a game of Simon Says making sure to include lots of S actions, such as: slither like a snake, sit down, sing a song, spin around, jump six times, and of course, Simon Says stop!

Provide sand pails, shovels, cups, and boxes and have a sandcastle building party. Put the kids into groups and let them have fun building the best sandcastle they can.

Snack Time for the Letter S

Serve strawberries with whipped cream to dip them into. Or serve spaghetti. You can also serve soup with a variety of crackers for the kids to crumble into their bowls.
