Arts and Crafts Activities for the Letter W
Save and dry the seeds from a watermelon to glue onto a watermelon made from a half circle of red paper glued onto a slightly lager half circle of green paper.
Make a windsock by decorating a piece of construction paper and stapling it into a cylinder. Staple paper streamers to the bottom of the cylinder and a piece of string to the top.
Make window pictures. Give each child a piece of light blue paper to draw an outdoor scene on. A winter scene would be especially appropriate. Use masking tape or electrical tap to make a horizontal and vertical stripe through the center of the paper and along all four edges to make a windowpane.
Early Math and Science Activities for the Letter W
Observe the three states of water. Let kids fill an ice cube tray with water to make ice and then watch a cup of water that is boiled over a stove as it becomes steam. Then have fun at a water table playing with cups, funnels, water, and ice cubes.
Early Literacy Activities for the Letter W
Read a selection of classic stories about the Big Bad Wolf. Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, and The Boy Who Cried Wolf are good stories to begin with.
Practice the tongue-twister "How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"
Play a game of telephone and practice whispering a message.
Active Play Activities for the Letter W
Kids will have fun walking like different animals. Practice walking like a gorilla with arms hanging down low, slowly and on all fours like a turtle, with long steps like a flamingo in the water, waddling like a duck, and with big stomps like an elephant.
Make a giant spider's web on the carpet with masking tape. Let the class walk around on it on all fours without falling off.
Dance and sing to a Wiggles video.
Snack Time for the Letter W
Serve slices of watermelon and wheat crackers, such as wheat thins, and white cheese, such as white cheddar. Crack open walnuts and taste the nut inside.
