Letter of the Week Project Ideas for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten

April
Kindergarten was one of my best teaching years. I pretty much made up my own schedule and enjoyed the day greatly. I have to say that the time did go by very fast, mostly because I kept the class constantly busy. I taught Kindergarten in a day care center. I did not want to watch the kids play for most of the day, even though 12 years ago, that would have been more acceptable than it is now. Part of the schedule was doing a letter of the week. I had to come up with at least two projects a week for each letter. Here are some things that I did.

Letter A - I gave the class a cutout of an apple with legs, arms, nose and a mouth. They had to cut out the pieces and paste the apple together with the proper parts in place. Then they colored the apple. (During circle time I read a book about apples)

Letter B - I did the same thing except they did a broccoli cut out and I read a book about broccoli and vegetables during story time.

Letter C - We made the letter C on construction paper with glue and then glued candy on it. (any leftovers were used for snack)

Letter E - Using an elephant cutout or pattern, the children glued peanuts on the elephant.

Letter F - Using a fish cutout, the children glued tissue paper on the fish to make fins.

Letter G - Students made a gate out of popsicle sticks and painted it. We also made the letter G with glue and glitter on construction paper.

Letter J- We used jellybeans and made the letter J on construction paper.

Letter K- We made a kite with popsicle sticks and attached a string. Then they painted it.

Letter M - Made the letter M using M&M's. (leftovers were used for snack)

Letter R- The kids painted a rainbow.

Letter U - Using an umbrella pattern, the children colored or painted it.

Letter W - Given a window on paper, the students decorated the outside of it with wall paper.

Letter X - We made an xylophone out of popsicle sticks. Then they painted it.

These are only a few ideas. There are plenty of projects that you can do for letter of the week and there are so many online resources that are available.
