Letter Writing the Lost Art

Ambrosia Jefferson
In the current days of instant gratification where a computerized voice says "You've Got Mail", it seems we have lost an understated but very important art. The art of letter writing. The days where you had cards printed for presenting on a silver tray for the Lady or Lord of the house, but also gone seem to be the days of long missives from family and friends. However, it does not have to be that way we can bring the art of penning a good letter back.

There does seem to be a movement coming about of all places on the World Wide Web, with websites like Postcrossing for sending postcards randomly to people world wide to The Letter Writers Alliance people are trying to revive the art of sending and receiving letters. It seems that there are people who dream of the long gone era in which you did not get all of your invitations and family news from a little box of text on a screen. Instead, they dream of a time when you sent a well-written letter sealed the envelope and waited while that letter traveled from the sender to the receiver. I do not know of a single letter writer who does not conjure up the image of Mr. Darcy or any other equally famous figure when they think of letter writing.

The best thing about the art of letter writing is that anyone can do it, and anyone can excel at it. Unlike other mediums where lets face it, you need a basic natural talent that is honed by teaching and trial and error, letter writing is for everyone and honed simply by putting pen to paper. You can be as creative as you want with your words paint your picture by telling a story and the best part of that story is that it is already there for you simply by living life.

Even within the art of letter writing there are other artistic finds. If you are a scrap booker or someone who likes to be crafty, you can make your own envelopes! Perhaps you like to work with graphic design on computers. Easy make your own return address labels or make a printed design for your stationery! You can do just about anything to make your letter unique in its content and in its wrapping and in a world of bills and junk mail why should not you?

With the economy having taken its drastic downslide and people spending more time at home I hope to see an even bigger surge in letter writing. This is a hobby and an art that almost anyone can afford so long as you have a pen some, paper and a few stamps. Let us get away from the instant gratification of electronic sending and enjoy the sweet sense of waiting for something you can keep and treasure for a lifetime to come.
