Letterman: Palin Has "Slutty Flight Attendant" Look; Chuck Nice Compares Palin to Herpes

Conservatives Get Defensive, Revealing Just How Directionless They Are

Saul Relative
It is no secret that David Letterman and his "Late Night" writers have had a field day with Sarah Palin since she came into the national spotlight in August of last year. (Then again, many comedians and pundits have had a field day with Sarah Palin and her dysfunctional soap opera.) And with the Republican Party seeming to be in a reenactment of the blind men attempting to describe the elephant, she has become a part of the Party that others not only see but hear about. After losing the general election, it seems that much of Palin's time has been geared toward making a presidential bid in 2012 and comedians like David Letterman and Chuck Nice, who appeared on the "Today Show" Tuesday, use her to their comedic advantage. All Alaska Governor and former 2008 vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin had to do this time was show up at a Republican fundraiser and spend some time in the Lower 48.

But conservative pundits and personalities are in an uproar over David Letterman's jokes about Sarah Palin's daughter getting "knocked up" at a Yankee ballgame and a reference to Sarah Palin's "slutty flight attendant look" in his nightly Top 10 list. While the first joke no doubt was intended to poke fun at Sarah Palin's conservative stance on family values and teenage abstinence, not to mention her inability to even make such an unrealistic program work in her own home, it crosses the line of edgy comedy to offensive in that it brings one of Palin's daughters (Letterman does not directly name a Palin offspring) into the joke. (He needs to be careful or he might bring out the "Mama Grizzly" in Palin...) The second joke is simple superficial analogy, but is being pushed by conservatives as offensive due to the use of the word "slutty," which is demeaning toward women in general and Sarah Palin in particular. And that is not to mention giving flight attendants a less-than-glamorous name.

When Sarah Palin was apprised of Letterman's words during an interview on John Zeigler's new radio program on KGIL in Los Angeles, she said that Letterman's comments were "pretty pathetic."

But David Letterman isn't the only one throwing out demeaning analogies. Although not receiving as much media attention (but it just might before it's over with), a joke delivered by "Best Week Ever" contributor/comedian Chuck Nice on Tuesday's "Today Show" was just as offensive as Letterman's, if not more so.

"And I'm going to say this, and please don't take it the way it sounds. But, Sarah Palin to the GOP, this is what I've got to say, she is very much like herpes, she's not going away. Okay? That's it. I'm not equating her with that. Everybody's laughing. I don't care. The band is cracking up."

Comparing Sarah Palin to a sexually transmitted disease, although "not equating her" with it, is still quite derogatory. It is certain that Palin is an embarrassment to many in the Republican Party and something they don't wish to talk about, something that seems to be the result of reckless behavior, something they wished they could get rid of but whose persistence in reappearing, although uncomfortable, must be dealt with each time she presents herself -- which is far more often than many in the GOP would like. Still, Chuck Nice's joke is distasteful.

Perhaps if the analogy had been used on former vice president Dick Cheney, it may have seemed less offensive...

But the problem really isn't in the jokes and the offensive connotations or analogies, no matter how much right-wing pundits want to make it so. It is within the Republican Party and the conservative movement itself. Like the blind men attempting to discern what they have encountered but only being able to touch upon only a limited section, they simply do not know what they have or are dealing with. And until they can start communicating effectively with each other, the only recourse is to distract and deflect, hoping to buy time, by ridiculing and attacking left-leaning comedians and their "edgy" and sometimes offensive attempts at humor. Posturing about non-issues, and in defense of a known political liability at that, will not realize the elephant.

Why should Sarah Palin be "fair game" for insulting and demeaning jokes. Because she's a strong woman? She's a state governor not some ditsy starlet. Have some respect please. When's the last time a male politian was judged so harshly for the behavior of their children, or mocked so relentlessly for their looks.

Sarah Palin will use anything to promote Sarah Palin.Where was Mother Palin when her daughter was getting pregnant and why didn't she take time to instruct and protect her daughter? This woman ran for vice President? Scary to even imagine that she be in a position to defend, and protect the U.S.A. when we all know, even if we don't admit, she wouldnt protect her own daughter.

I think David Letterman is an insecure loser who finds strength in putting others down. I am sure this is a result of having been an outcast in his younger days probably due to an oozing complexion. He is unattractive (bravo for finally getting your teeth fixed after all of these years but lose the white socks, please !) and has zero talent. His snide comments and sarcastic manner are not enoough to mask the fact that he lacks charisma. He is an absolute bore and for that reason should be FIRED. His Sarah Palin comments are those of a desperate man who needs the support of the far left brain-dead, kool-aid drinking masses to maintain his viewership.

No one will have to worry about David Letterman making a dirty sexist joke about any of the O'Bama family. CBS would not let him get away with that. He should suffer the same fate as Imus. Nobody wants their children or wives to have comedians talk slutty talk about them.

Whatever, it's a joke, and some jokes will undoubtably be in poor taste. If you don't want to be at risk for them, then don't put yourself in the spotlight. It's so obvious that he was referring to Palin's clearly faulty teachings on abstinence rather than safe practices, and I have no idea why angry, loud-mouth "conservatives" would jump at the chance to accuse Letterman of not only referring specifically to an underage daughter (who is not the one with a baby) or a situation that would have involved anything remotely like rape. If "knocked up" meant rape, wouldn't that refer to Levi Johnston and Bristol too?

Eh, I am sure I can understand why flight attendants would not want to be compared with Palin, that comment and even the herpes one don't irk me, bc she herself should be fair game. The children, however, are NOT, and the comment that Letterman made about the daughter was completely inappropriate. I'm on her side about that one.

He is just a dirty old man I would never let my children near him, rape a 14 year old for shame.

Irrespective of what political side you are on, comedy today is most often racy. It has always been racy. And the point is, it doesn't mean anything ultimately. It is a time to allow us to laugh. Of course the conservatives don't see the humor in it and I will give them that. It would be like David attacking some part of Obama's character. The liberals just wouldn't get it but they would have to accept that it was humor and doesn't mean anything ultimately. The political battleground should not be comedy but in our country, it has in fact become that in part. Oh well.... Only in America!

Letterman and his East Coast ilk are frothing at the mouth in fear and anger at the prospect of an attractive, successful, and influential woman who does not support abortion rights. The Liberal Elite will do anything to denigrate the Palin family, which, like all families, has its flaws but draws the line at killing its members.

  • Gulliver Foyle6/11/2009

Just another example of bias from the left. Attack and destroy Palin and her family. Why didn't Letterman make jokes about Obama's daughters getting raped by A-Rod when they visited NY recently? Or about Obama's wife matronly appearance? Becuase of bias. You don't see the personal, viral attacks againts left leaning people, only against conservatives. It's typical, you dehumanize your opponents instead of challenging them intellectually, the left wings usual strategy.
