Letters to My Granddaughter: Sneaking a Peak

A Pregnancy Journal (2/18/09)

Ultrasound is so sophisticated. Can it help a grandmother "see" who the baby is?

There are several parts to this story. There is the part in which I traveled to be with you at your ultrasound. I wanted to be there for the "gender reveal" -not because we care about your gender darling... altho there are so many gender related baby stories I can tell you. Many of which your father (often mistaken for a girl) does not find so amusing.

I wanted to be there for you, Princess. For you, Slugger. Because each big reveal, each veil the dancer time drops, gives us a closer picture of the real you and a future with you in it.

We are holding our breath for that moment, beloved. We are sneaking all the peeks we can get.

The story ends that after much hoopla (which included an errant uncle, the descent of unexpected relatives on your parents, a death in your mother's family and much manipulation and remanipulation of dog-sitters and train schedules) when I arrived, you didn't.

Well, the pictures of you didn't. You were still very much there as your mother and her aching back can attest to.

The rescheduled ultrasound/sonogram (first picture day) took place later without me. Your parents sent me the pictures. Much better images than I had when your dad was in vitro.

Here we are then. Peek-a-boo.
