Lettuce recall is announced right after the Tylenol recall and the hype about a possible Pampers recall. The lettuce recall is the third in just a few days. What is the lettuce recall about?

The lettuce recall affects 23 states and the District of Columbia. According to AP, the lettuce recall happens after at least 19 people were sick, 3 with life-threatening symptoms and diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome.

The lettuce recall products were sold in the following states: Alabama, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The lettuce recall includes packages marked best if used by May 12 or an earlier date. Other products included in the lettuce recall are the to-go salads at Marsh, Great Eagle, Kroger and Ingles stores.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported on Thursday that 12 people were hospitalized. Currently the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are looking at 10 more possible cases linked to the lettuce recall.

The lettuce recall was initiated by Freshway Foods of Sidney, Ohio. The reason for the lettuce recall is a possible link to the recent E. coli outbreak. Those affected includes students at Daemen College in New York, Ohio State and the University of Michigan. E. coli causes diarhhea and can lead to severe complications such as damage to your kidneys.

Freshway Foods sells lettuce to delis, salad bars in stores, wholesalers and food service outlets. The FDA is investigating lettuce grown in Arizona.

The contamination was discovered by a Public Health Laboratory in Albany, New York after checking out a bag of Freshway Foods shredded lettuce. A complete investigation of the lettuce recall is being conducted by the FDA.

The lettuce recall comes at a time when more people are eating salads. Now that I joined the gym, I am eating salads everyday. It is an excellent reminder to wash off your lettuce and veggies before eating.
