L'go My Ego

Agency Life Can Suck Sometimes

The funniest part about working at the San Saba Agency was that so many people sprouted egos over the stupidest little things. "OOOhhh! Look at my new office," or "my parking space is better than yours" were good enough ego-boosters for some people. Others grew egos over the power they had over other people or departments, because of their title, situation, placement in Charlie's hierarchy, or otherwise.

I'll start off by saying that I had no real beef with Monica. Don't get me wrong, Monica was a bitch, and I knew exactly the types of shenanigans she would pull on other people at the agency, but she was nice enough to me. Well...at least she was not as bitchy (she'd have her moments for sure though). I think she knew she could have a fresh start with me because I was new, and I didn't know any of her history with the agency. From what I understood, those that knew her hated her guts.

She was an alpha-dog; she had to be the top dog at the agency. Anyone who threatened her position or place in the agency hierarchy would sorely be fired, threatened, disposed of, intimidated, harassed or even pushed to the point of insanity just because Monica had to be supreme queen bee of the agency. Once again, I must reiterate, I had no beef with Monica, and she was actually cordial with me; she was just such a pain-in-the-ass to work with because of her "know it all" personality, and egocentric tendencies. Since I'm actually the opposite of an "alpha-dog" and am scared shitless of any spotlight, I think I made Monica comfortable enough with me for her not to consider me threatening. She yelled at me a few times, but because I have a thick skin and I don't give a damn about status or work, I was just like, "yeah, whatever." Maybe I'm not confrontational. Maybe, I just know how to pick my battles. Regardless, she didn't ruffle my feathers too much, and I sure as hell tried not to ruffle hers.

One time, there was a party at James' house, and Rocky, the creative director, talked some shit about Monica. Sergio, an Account Manager working under Monica at the time, overheard Rocky's comments, and told Monica and Charlie what he had heard at the party over the weekend. So despite all this happening over the weekend, Charlie called Rocky into his office that Monday and suspended him for 3 days.

(Rocky actually got in trouble for talking shit about someone from the agency in his spare time? Wow, I guess Charlie is the moral authority on what happens at the agency, and out of the agency as well. )

Charlie was severely offended, as was Monica, and they both couldn't believe that Rocky could think such horrid things about such a wonderful person such as Monica. Charlie demanded that Rocky take the time to think about what he had done, and to come back to the agency refreshed, ready to apologize to Monica after his suspension. Rocky, being the head of the creative department, left the agency for three days which left Charlie and Monica in charge of his creative department while he was gone. Monica, in her infinite wisdom or own self-obsessed delusion, played the damsel in distress in front of the creative department, asking them if it was fair that Rocky onlyreceive a 3-day suspension, since she had never done anything to him, and she was the affected victim. James and the rest of the creatives scoffed at the idea because Monica was a bitch, and Rocky hadn't said anything that they hadn't thought already. Monica, according to the lot of them, was an arrogant, demanding, unrealistic bossy bitch that didn't know squat about advertising. That, and she didn't value their work and made their life miserable. Instead of working with them, she would push forth her own agendas, as well as push along Charlie's agendas, instead of doing what was right by the client. She wanted power; Charlie wanted money. The creatives just wanted to do their work in peace. Maya, Rocky's wife and Charlie's IT person, begged Rocky not to apologize to Monica because the bitch needed to know the truth, and he had only said the truth; the truth everyone else in the agency knew to be true. Rocky ended up apologizing because he knew Charlie and Monica would make his life miserable if he didn't. What he didn't count on was that they were going to make his life miserable anyway, since he was no longer one of them, and was now an outsider.

As were those who agreed with Rocky.
