LIAR, LIAR!

The Potential of Annual Pinocchio Awards

Werner Haas

We live in a mendacious world, made up of liars, cheats, frauds- some of the Mitch McConnell, Sarah Palin and other Tea Party/Republican variety, others merely small little inaccuracies or misleading statements. So, I think it is time to recognize those among us who we recognize as liars, large and small. Therefore, I am suggesting the Pinocchio Awards. From now till the end of the year, I want to hear from as many of you- your friends and family and neighbors from all over the world, nominating the best (or worst) liar of the year.

The nominee can be a politician, doctor, teacher, family member, insurance or car salesman, teacher, student, store owner or clerk, someone trying to sell you something on eBay...anyone you feel is worthy of the Pinocchio Award.

Send your nominations to Associatedcontent.com, whether with your name or anonymously. We'll print as many as possible between now and January. Somehow, I hope the national media picks up the idea and turns it into a gala, with the prize - an eighteen-inch elongated nose- going to the winner (or loser) as nominated by popular Acclaim. Maybe there can be a TV special. I think it is certainly meaningful in the world in which we try to survive, stimulus or no.

The Pinocchio Awards are your opportunity to be like that character in the film "Network" who had everybody leaning out their windows and yelling "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it any more!" Well, here is your chance to do more than yell. It is time to expose those who do so much of the lying, whereby they profit and the rest of us are made to suffer. It is time to point to those who have been getting away with it for years, and shame them in public, and let them cry "Libel!" or "slander!" all they want to.

This goes well beyond any one community (or country), of course. So, come on! Flood the internet with your nominations for the Pinocchio Awards! It is time that honesty is once again recognized as the best policy! Let's hear from you. Don't be afraid to name names!!! And, for the national media: Here is a chance for a huge audience the first of the year- an idea whose time has come!
