Chris Matthews, a well known television personality made a statement that for the hour President Obama was speaking; he forgot the President was black. That remark goes hand in hand with the comment Harry Reid said, "...a black man who only talks black when he wants to."
Of course, considering the logic behind the annotations does not merit either of the two being called a racist, it does however prove that both Chris Matthews and Harry Reid, opened their mouth and inserted their foot.
The lack of understanding "ghetto" language, or if you please, "Ebonics" often displayed in the black communities, leads the white race to assert, the black race does not have the skill to converse appropriately.
An enthralled audience would swiftly lose awareness if the speaker used connotations such as, "axe me", "next munt ", or "my baby daddy." Ask me, next month or my baby's daddy, would certainly be more complimentary to the audience. Of course, that scenario applies only if the audience is lacking in ability to understand and comprehend Ebonics. Ebonics of course, is not used by professional lecturers.
Southerners also have their own vernacular. "lesco" or "jeet " or "ratyonner". Well, la-de-da, I ain' neva herd sech." Go figure; is it alright for the white southern folks to loom their dialects, yet the blacks must retreat or be measured as ignorant?
In all veracity, it is very fitting listening to anyone, black or white give a speech using proper grammar. Constructing words that measure the length of a man's arm is relatively hard to understand, but a good speaker will do that. Oft times the words that roll off their tongues, are words the ordinary person does not comprehend; frequently losing the attention of their audience to utter monotony.
Chris Matthews, in addition to Harry Reid's comment seems to limit the abilities of a black person. Being a true southerner, it is truthfully said that the above mentioned words are easier to say, and a lazy approach to getting our point across. Why waste one's time saying, "Let's go", or "did you eat", or "right over there" when you can articulate with just one word? That is known as southern articulation; if I may append.
Another pet idiom is, "yan door." Which means, "The door over there?" That in itself is for some very interesting conversation.
Take a look at, our neighbors up North. "Youz guys." refers to male or female. No gender discrimination on their part whatsoever. Shift a bit to the Northeast, "pak yo kar by the cub." Alright, point proved. All men are created equally; however, all dialects are not created equally.
Here in our country the great US of A, there are countless ways to say very similar things. Often we travel from one state to the other and cannot appreciate dialect spoken in that particular locale.
Chris Matthews was wrong by what he said, and so was Harry Reid. First and foremost, Obama is not a black man if what we know about him is truth. He had a white mother, and supposedly a black dad. He is bi-racial. His white grandparents raised him for the largest part part of his life, so in actuality, wouldn't he speak with the dialect he grew up with? In addition, he has a speech writer who writes every speech. It is also on a Teleprompter which is most graciously used by the President. We do not know in his leisure hours, mulling with the guys, or on the basketball court how he speaks, but what difference does it make? Does the dialect of a person alone, make a substantial individual?
In essence, the majority of the American people do not care about Obama's oratorical skills, whether he speaks "Ebonics" or whether he speaks "down home lingo." His oratorical skills during his campaign played a part in getting him elected into office. People raged about his ability to speak properly. Today, judging the condition of our economy, job and home losses, and fear of terrorist attacks has by far taken precedence over his capability to speak before an audience.
We as a nation have long ago lost the flavor of his sing-song speeches, and now wonder if he ever had the fortitude to run the country. Or will he ruin the country? Was he accomplished enough to take the Oath of Office, or was he egotistical enough to stammer through the Oath, insisting on repeating it for the second time, aware he had put on a pair of shoes much too large for his feet? For some of us, the jury is still out. Others allege the judge has handed down the verdict. At the end of the day, it matters not whether he has a dialect of sorts, or the gift to eloquently express his ideas or thoughts coherently. It does matter that regardless how he speaks it, it should be truthful and honest. In retrospect, the Presidents oratory skills outweigh by far; his ability to be truthful and honest.
