Liberty University Higher-Ups Control Political Climate at School

Pulling the Plug on the Young Democrats Club

Michelle K. Miller
According to Mark Hine, Liberty University's Vice President of Student Affairs, "The Democratic Party platform is contrary to the mission of Liberty University and to Christian doctrine..." This includes the Democratic Party's support of ever-popular political hot buttons, LGBT rights and pro-choice stance in a woman's right to choose.

The Young Democrats Club's constitution supports the Democratic Party, so this is why they are being shut down. It's no secret that Liberty University is ultra-conservative, and hasn't been a fan of the Democratic Party, but this is just reaching a new level of being vocal about it. According to the source, if the club holds meetings on campus or uses Liberty University's name in advertising, people from the now-former club will be in violation of The Liberty Way, and will receive reprimands for punishment.

Also, apparently, Mark Hine has said that, "You can't be a Democrat and be a Christian and be a university representative." I think what he really meant, as the real bottom line, is that you can't be Christian and be a Democrat at the same time, period." Apparently, Jesus had political affiliations, and he was a diehard Republican.

This line crossing is a big deal to people in the area. Aside from myself, there are other former Liberty University students, who are just as outraged. We had to endure a lot of hardship at the university when we attended, but it seems to us, that Liberty is getting more and more bold in their attempts to reform Lynchburg, and make them all convert to Baptist-denominated Christianity and Republican-only voting. There are also comments on the source article, ranging from emotions of "Are you surprised?" to "What a bunch of hypocrites!" on our side.

It's really sad that Liberty continues to take freedoms away, however it isn't all on their heads. It's on the heads of the silent. I am well aware that there are Christian liberals on campus, that are afraid of "what Liberty will do," if they find out what they really believe, but if they faced adversity and stood up for what they really believed in, instead of submitting, maybe there'd be some fighting power.

What's next? My guess is asking your political affiliation and the political affiliation of your family, on the application, and you're a reject if you don't have the correct answer, on their terms. I wouldn't be surprised.

Liberty means freedom, and in this case, it is extremely ironic.

There are conflicting statements, and these people are trying to scramble, to cover their asses. If Falwell, Jr. didn't say they were banned, the Mark Hine needs to be fired foe his miscommunication.

By the way, this article was written when I read the article came out that it WAS banned, and this was after Mark McDouchebag sent out his email.

Hey, I was just told that Liberty did NOT ban the democrats. See Mr. Falwell's statement on Liberty University website.

This action by Liberty is unacceptable. I am a Conservative who in no way supports this foolish and dictatorial nonsense. Even Democrats can and do believe in God and their political differentiation is no threat to Liberty or Christianity. What asses! Nice job Michelle.
