Libraries Within Yuba County, CA

Going to the library to pick up your favorite book is not as popular as it once used to be. With technology increasing and with the availability to just download the book to your computer or some other nifty device why would you ever leave your home to grab a book? Although I am someone who loves technology I find this sad as there is nothing better than reading from the actual book. In fact, I can't sit at my computer and read a whole book on screen and I don't think I ever will. Having the actual book just completes the whole reading process. That is just one of the reasons why you should still take trips to your local library! Libraries have a lot of activities to offer depending on the branches that are within your area. Today, I will review three local libraries around the Yuba County area in California.

The first library is the Yuba County library located on 303 second street in Marysville. They are open Monday-Thursday 11am-7pm and Saturdays 10am-6pm. The Yuba County library offers the availability to request books from all our counties in the US if they don't have the book in that you are looking for. In addition you may requests books for four weeks , six VHS videos can be checked out for one week, four DVD's can be checked out for one week, and new arrival books can be checked out for two weeks all with the option to renew as long as no one else has put in a request for the same item. They also provide story times and reading readiness for children to attend. They have a room dedicated to local history totaling about 7,000 titles to research if anyone is interested in learning about the Yuba County local history. They also host a variety of different activities which can be found on their online calendar or by stopping in/calling to ask. Some of this month's activities included a chess tournament, pajama story time, teen events, scrapbooking, and story & craft time. They hold special activities every month so make sure you take advantage of them!

The Yuba County Library is probably known as the main library for the local Yuba County area, but it is not the only one. There is also the Health Education Access Library (HEAL) located within the Sutter North Medical Center at 480 Plumas Street. They are open Tuesdays, Thursday, and Friday 11am-5pm. While this library is extremely small, I just visited it myself and they have in-depth information on medical issues. I recently checked out a very informative DVD about childbirth and lamaze since I'm expecting in June. This saves my husband and me from trying to find an affordable class to attend which usually takes up your whole evening for several days a week. While going to a class can be beneficial and it's always nice to learn in person, this DVD offers those on tighter schedules, on off shift schedules, or tighter budgets to get the same knowledge. This wouldn't have been possible without the HEAL services. HEAL also offers internet searches on medical issues, pamphlets, books, medical journals, newspapers, and a few other available resources to find information on medical issues/concerns.

Lastly, if you are military member of the local Air Force Base then you have access to the Hub Zemke Library located on the base at 16th&B Street. Their hours of operation are Monday-Thursday 10am-8pm, Friday 10am-3pm and Saturday-Sunday 12pm-5pm. The Hub Zemke Library offers many of the same services that the Yuba County library offers, however it is closer for those with access to the base. They offer a wide selection of books, videos, magazines, and DVD's for a patron to check out and they can also order materials from other bases if they don't have something you are looking for. They also have several computers available to use for research, use of internet, typing up papers, printing materials, and more. They provide access to a scanner, copier, and fax machines as well. In addition they also offer special activities for the community. Some of next month's activities include a poetry contest, story time for children, and internet class to help those learn how to use the internet.

There are several more libraries within the area (court house, family history) and also some within driving distance if you don't mind driving to surrounding areas such as Sacramento, Roseville, or Chico. The comforting thing is our community does offer libraries with plenty or resources and activities and the community should take advantage of them. So, take some time to visit them and see what they have to offer. Who knows, maybe you will fall in love reading an actual book again or find a way to volunteer and give back to the community!
