I thought it was all so easy. Apparently not. I wrote an article about the difference between liberals and conservatives and thought I spelled out everything pretty simply and plainly. As they say today, "Me Bad". Nothing is simple and plain for those who refuse to look at something with an open mind.
My article ran 4 pages and the responses I got were quite eye opening. Running about half for and half against, I knew I would have to try again. Sad, but true, I know.
I know that I am pretty stubborn at times, but I always try to look at the other side to see things I never thought of, to perhaps even agree with my opponent on some points I hadn't thought of, to try to learn something, to keep my debating skills sharp. Out of all the responses I got on that article, only one asked me to look at what he had written on the subject and I probably will. However, the rest of the comments degenerated quite quickly into nothing more than name calling, and as humourous as they were (I love using the word 'humourous as it drives the Yanks nuts when they see an extra 'U') they really didn't add much to the debate.
I looked at two different articles on this subject, written from opposing views and then sided with one by picking apart the other. Not exactly brain surgery here, all I did was try to point out why one side should be supported over the other. I had imagined that readers would do the same and come back to tell me where I was full of shit. Sorry folks, it didn't happen.
My first reply came from a guy who sort of got apoplectic about the whole thing. He told me I was wrong, wrong, wrong, but failed to tell me where and how. He did reveal himself as an atheist Democrat and asked me where he should start to pull me apart. He never did. He went on and on about a statement I made saying no one wants a war. "And lastly, you say no one wants war. Wrong again-the neo cons wanted war, pushed war, salivated over war, and want to push it to new areas." he wrote. Pretty strong words. 'Salivated'? 'Pushed'? Please!! First off, he failed to see the little item about both Dems and Reps having the same intelligence and info in front of them right after 9/11. He failed to see the little item about Dems and Reps all voting the same way, for war right after 9/11. He can't understand how someone might not want a war but is forced into it. Some will answer that call, others will cut and run. He touches on religion by saying, "I (as a Liberal) don't care if they follow their ten commandments are (sic) (please pay attention to the spelling, it comes up again later) not, I just don't want to see them. Poor baby. Those who want to have them in public buildings are burning this guys eyes out. I wonder what else he doesn't want to see? A burhka or a veil? Maybe a Menorah. Maybe a Christmas tree rather than a 'Holiday tree'. We should shelter this boy. It is the liberal thing to do. Instead, we can let him enjoy his Gay Pride Parades. You know, that's the great thing about living in a free country. You can see something you disagree with and ignore it. No one forces you to look at the Ten Commandments, a burhka, or a gay pride parade. The Ten Commandments offend this guy so much he wants it out of his line of sight. But the Conservatives are the narrow minded ones. According to him anyway.
The next good comment came from a girl who objected to my spelling of 'Kwanzaa'. I have used her spelling of the word here, I spelled it 'Kwanza'. She may have me here. I write my articles and spell things the way I know them or try to spell them correctly by phonetically sounding them out. At the end of each article, I run through 'Spell Check' just to make sure. As you can imagine, this plays havoc with words spelled the Canadian way as it is the American dictionary that 'Spell Check' uses. Words like humourous, favourite, or neighbourhood are constantly underlined as being spelled wrong. I've learned to live with it and so have my more intelligent American readers. I ran it through and the spelling it gave me was the one I used. I could care less about Kwanzaa or Kwanza or Quanssa or however you want to spell it. The Africans want to celebrate it, fine, let them. She writes, "I was correcting the "spelling" mistake because I was offended by it." Okay, well I'm offended by her attitude. She writes further, "Alluding to religions, cultures and people that you know nothing about, and then make it blatantly obvious you know nothing about, is offensive. But, since the claim is that conservatives are so very "tolerant" of other religions and beliefs. I'm sure you wouldn't mind if I spelled CHRISMUSS wrong, right?" She's got me there. I don't know anything about Kwanza and I really don't care. It is their celebration so let them have it. You can bet your ass I'm going to get some info on Kwanza though. And she's also right when she picks on my spelling because, out of a 4 page article, that's the best she can come up with because she is so tolerant where Conservatives are not. This girl is proud of the fact that she graduated from college (she spells it with a capital 'C', as if that makes it special. Probably form an affirmative action liberal arts course (read: basket weaving here, folks) and good for her. Some people can only do so much. I graduated from college as a mechanical technician, so what? Does that make one of us smarter than the other? Not likely. But it might just be the difference in being led by the nose and being able to read and form honest open ended opinions. BTW my Spell Check is still telling me that 'Kwanza' is correct.
She goes on to rant, "I do not want you to read what I write ......". Apparently her stuff is so poor only the illiterate or other Dem sheep can grasp it. "And you should know, that being insulted by a hillbilly, UNEDUCATED, sheltered, backward thinking fool doesn't bother me." she continues. This is meant for someone who has "worked for and with Pulitzer Prize winning authors like Cleveland Amory. I also spend time with politicians like Harry Reid, Jim Gibbons and John Ensign. Among my friends are world class performers like the Smothers Brothers, Robert England and Jimmy Doohan. I have worked for 2 newspapers and owned one of my own. I am also friends with several award winning authors and artists." I guess the trend to make up what you don't know runs deep in the Democratic bent. Remember, this girl accused me of not knowing about Kwanza and was offended not by that fact, but by the 'fact' I misspelled it. She ends by saying, "Thanx, I'm signing off." Not true, she didn't sign off and her spelling of 'Thanks' leaves a little bit to be desired, don't you think? Go figure.
Anyway, I've gone on long enough about this. I have another article in the works on this same subject and I promise to keep it simple so the Dems can get it too. In the meantime, keep reading and commenting folks. This is fun.

Post a CommentGreat idea. Afraid to read the other article, because I am addicted to reading comments. Thank you for summing up yours so nicely.
Leo, I didn't realize it was 3 pages. I am long-winded, aren't I? The point of the exercise was to get people to read. The Dems seem to have a habit of cutting and running. Nikki, I commend you for coming back and trying to stick up for yourself. Let's face it, spelling is a pretty, petty thing to wrap a comment around. S L, I try my best. Sometimes I can hit a homer, other times I die at the plate. No need to thank me for any support. What you write makes sense. It's just to bad some people can't debate the argument without resorting to childish name-calling. I thought this site was for open minded people and boy, am I ever getting my eyes opened.
Good god, man. Are my eyes failing me or did you seriously just write a 3-page article about THE COMMENTS THAT WERE POSTED TO YOUR LAST ARTICLE?! I've heard of people not having anything to write about before, but you've just taken it to a strange and terrifying new extreme. Congratulations.
It is fine to defend yourself, I should have just let it go and not written anything, because I agree it makes no sense to read an entire article and have nothing better to comment on besides spelling. But, I'd like to clarify yet another petty little thing. I was only responding to S.L. about her statement that I "need to take a writing class." She says this often, and I felt like I needed to respond with evidence that I obviously have taken a writing class. Very petty, it's no better that I'm in the middle of it. Because you do probably know more about politics than I do, and I am well read in world religions and philosophy, the spelling did bother me; but the correction had no place on a piece about politics (or did it? I don't know.) Regardless, way to stand by your words and defend them, commendable in and of itself.
