Lickety-Split Knit Dishcloth Pattern

Quick-to-Knit Dishcloth

Marie Anne St. Jean

I haven't knit since I was a child (I won't mention how long ago that was), but recently decided to pick up a pair of knitting needles to make some dishcloths. I have a favorite crochet dishcloth pattern, but love the knitted versions too for when you want a cloth that's more pliable and not so thick. After knitting a few others, I wrote out this simple knit dishcloth pattern of my own. It doesn't require a lot of counting and the pattern repeat is easy to follow, so anyone who knows how to cast on and hold knitting needles should be able to work this up lickety-split.

Lickety-Split Knit Dishcloth

Finished size approx 8"x8"

Note: I've written the pattern to slip stitch the first stitch and purl the last stitch in every row. Doing this keeps the finished piece from curling.

With size 6 knitting needles, cast on 42

Rows 1-4: SS, knit remainder of row to last stitch, P1

Pattern Rows:

Row 5
: SS, knit remainder of row to last stitch, P1
Row 6: SS, K3 (P4, K2, P4) to last 4 sts, K3, P1
Row 7: SS, knit remainder of row to last stitch, P1
Row 8: SS, K3 (P4, K2, P4) to last 4 sts, K3, P1
Row 9: SS, knit remainder of row to last stitch, P1
Row 10: SS, K3, purl across to last 4 sts, K3, P1
Row 11: SS, knit across to last stitch, P1
Row 12: SS, K3, purl across to last 4 sts, K3, P1
Row 13-44: Repeat pattern rows 5-12 four times
Row 45-48: Repeat rows 5-8
Row 49-53: SS, knit remainder of row to last stitch, P1

Bind off, weave in ends.

Respectfully, I think there's a glitch in the pattern. To knit this cloth exactly as the pattern says will give you a cloth that doesn't look like the picture. I believe Row 6 and Row 8 should read:
    SS, K3 (P4, K2) to last 8 sts, P4, K3, P1
of course, this should be included in the repeated rows.

My grandmother used to knit. I have been trying to learn how so I can pass the tradition on to my kids. Great job!

Good idea, think I will crochet it though! Thanks.

I'm going to pick up those knitting needles soon too and re-learn this craft.

Thanks for sharing, M.A., but it's all Greek to me!
