Life Canceled by NBC, Won't Return for Fall 2009 Lineup

NBC Announced that it Will Cancel Life and Make Room for a New Show in the 2009 NBC Fall Lineup

"Life is canceled." Those were the words from NBC co-chairman Ben Silverman on Monday, as he announced the news that fans of the show had feared. While some shows don't know their fate yet when it comes to be re-newed or not (read Chuck and Law and Order), they came right out and announced the cancellation of Life. The NBC fall lineup will instead go in a different direction, and with some of the sneak previews about what will be on the network in the fall, it seems that they didn't have room for this show on the schedule.

For those familiar with the show, Life was an intriguing and original cop show that didn't adhere to some of the same rules that other dramas worked with on television. The show focused on a Los Angeles detective named Charlie Crews (played by Damian Lewis) and how he dealt with working his job and past issues at the same time. This all takes place after Crews has been in prison for a crime that he didn't commit, and is now back at work to do what he does best. The show started back in the fall of 2007, and had been holding on for a while, but seems to have seen its last breath.

During the second season of Life the show was averaging about 6.2 million viewers per episode according to the Nielsen ratings, which wasn't quite as good as they had hoped for in the beginning. It didn't help matters that the show kept getting moved around, splitting time between Wednesday and Friday nights, and also spending a short stint in NBC's Monday night listings. The show couldn't keep a foot-hold though, and NBC has now decided to go in a different direction with several other new shows that they hope to premiere in the 2009 fall lineup.

It's too bad that a show like Life couldn't survive, but maybe it could find second life on something like the USA Network. It didn't stand a real chance at coming back when it was announced that Jay Leno would be taking over the 10 p.m. time slot in the next season of television, as it has led to cutting many 10 p.m. shows. The official release of the NBC fall lineup will be coming on Tuesday, May 19th, but for now, they have just been releasing sneak-peaks at what the shows are which will be tested.

    BRING LIFE BACK NOW... Please... that is a fantastic show. We finally get a show that works and is truely entertaining and they cancel it? What kind of morons are running that station???

    They need to bring "Life" back, but not with a romance between Charlie & Dani. NBC has made alot of bad choices in what to air and they lose fans because they keep moving things around...same thing happened with the final season of the best Law & oder, the original. The new one...will tank.

    Amen, Mike! I don't know who's in charge of programming at NBC, but are they just brain damaged? Every time they get a quality show that has a chance of being really great, first they start changing its schedule, so nobody knows when it's going to be on, or they put it up against something on another network that is so popular it doesn't stand a chance, and because they've shot themselves in the foot with the 'musical chairs' scheduling, it never gets a real following. People are creatures of habit, and get used to a TV routine, but NBC doesn't allow that to happen, so their shows fail. And for some reason, nobody there realizes that there are actually 7 nights in a week. Why do they have to cram all their programming on to a couple of nights? These morons are either too old to realize that the 3 network TV model has changed, or too stupid to understand the behavior of people who watch TV. NBC needs to hire a programming director with an IQ over 80. Maybe then the Syfi network w

    Now I don't have to bother watching NBC anymore now...thanks to all the morons and idiots running the network.....Go pretend that Leno was the answer...LOL What a joke...you guys just took too steps backwards.....the genius that runs your network must have the IQ of a child. One of the best Shows to ever land on network television. Life was an original mix of humor and drama all wrapped up in one great show.....I would really love to see another network if they could pick this show up and take it for a run a few more seasons.......awesome show....Screw you NBC. YOU BLOW!

    I still think about that last episode, truly a great show. I think it would be an awesome addition to TNT with The Closer and Men of A Certain Age...especially with Saving Grace going away. Come on TNT, you picked up Southlands which was half as good of a show as Life. Go get it!

    I am just finding Life on hulu and I have to say its one of the best shows out there. Smart and quirky. I just had to find out if it was cancelled and I am very sorry to hear that it has. I hope someone picks it up elsewhere.

    @Linda

    This is NBC's fault..not ABC's. ABC is an alright station though.
