Life with Dogs

Ebie Harris
Someone once told me that you can reduce stress by petting a dog. I was having a really bad week. By the time my husband got home I rubbed most of the fur off of our dog's head. I was still stressed. I think the person must of meant rubbing a cat reduces stress.

The other day my black lab kept barking and barking. I am looking outside, no one was there. I could not figure out what his problem was. Then I noticed it. There looking back at him was another black lab. I had recently purchased a hallway mirror and this was his first encounter with it.

I had a dog that loved to run. He always stayed in the yard. However, when I went to visit my parents I was concerned about him being in a new area. So for the first time ever I tied him out. Less than 5 minutes later I heard a yelping coming from outside. When I went outside there was my dog upside down still tied to the rope. He apparently got to the end of his rope and did not know what to do next. Yup, mans best friend.

My dog loved to follow me everywhere. One day I went to get the neighbors mail for them because they were on vacation. When I had turned around my dog had gone into the middle of their man made pond and ripped out there fountain. I had to climb in up to my knees to re-secure the fountain. They will be home in two days. I hope it still works.

We had adopted a dog from our local shelter. A few days later the dog got out. We ran all around the neighborhood looking for him. Just when we were about to give up I said to my husband when did the Blake's get a dog. He did not know they had one. That is when we realized our new dog was across the street sitting on their front porch. He apparently forget his way home.

My dog loves water. Apparently a little too much. One day I found him in our backyard chewing on our neighbors sprinkler. I am still not sure how he got it since we have a fenced in backyard.

Our dog, like many, has a one track mind. He loves to chase squirrels. However, we can call anything a squirrel and he will go after it. The other day a girl scout came ringing my door bell to sell me her over priced cookies; all I said was Squirrel. I ended up with free cookies.

My husband had these slippers that he absolutely loved. I was always complaining about them because they were old, smelly, and hideous looking. One day while cooking I accidentally dropped sauce all over them. I tried to wash them off and they fell apart in the washer. Right before he got home I gave them to the puppy to chew on. There was no way he was going to believe it was an accident and who can stay mad at a cute puppy?

We had a black lab -- the best family dog you can get. Good read.
