Life is Equally Beautiful with Alternative Christmas Celebrations

Christmas: An Has Become an Extremely Commercial Holiday so This Yea We Opted for an Alternative Christmas Celebration

Robert Jillie
I am an agnostic at heart. Sometimes I think I belong to no religion, or perhaps I belong to every religion in the world. The Socratic school of thought, where knowledge is more important than faith, has had a major influence on me, and as a result my family and kids too have quite the same thought process as mine.

However, I do not wish to alienate myself, or my family during Christmas holiday. Therefore, we have devised our own alternative Christmas celebrations to participate in and share the joys of the world around us. We use the Christmas holiday as an opportunity to spend more time with each other, and come closer as a family.

I and my wife encourage our kids to join us in creating unique home decorations that may not necessarily reflect the traditional décor associated with Christmas, but they are imaginative and joyous nonetheless. It becomes like a family craft project. There is nothing that makes our kids happier than to see their parents becoming one of them, and indulging in craft activities along with them.

Apart from home activities, we also plan outdoor visits as a part of our alternative Christmas celebrations. If there is a good family concert in town, we will usually include it in our holiday itinerary. Otherwise, everyone comes up with his or her suggestions and we take a family vote where. It could be a visit to the museum or the aquarium, or a fun-filled day out at the amusement park, or perhaps a picnic at a nice park. The wish of the majority usually prevails in making the final choice.

Since kids associate Christmas with a lot gifts, we have created our own tradition here as well. We go out together to the market and buy a lot of presents for the little orphans at the local orphanage that we support. I can speak from personal experience that there is nothing more thrilling for your kids than when they can bring smiles to the faces of the lesser privileged kids with so many little gifts. It instills human values in them in a wonderful way, and makes for a memorable occasion too.

Our alternative Christmas celebrations are topped with an alternative menu that is certainly as enjoyable and as delicious as any other. My family loves Salmon as a special food, and it makes a perfect food for a great celebration.

Overall, I believe, we make the most of our alternative celebrations, and share the same spirit of joy and love with everyone else who celebrate Christmas traditionally.
