Life on Mars, Best Show on Earth

A Great Show, and Why We Love It

ANNE RUSH
It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a television show as much I have the new ABC drama Life On Mars. This American adaptation of the BBC version starring Jason O'Mara offers great characters (and actors), fabulous music, really great 70's era fashion and an intriguing (superbly written) story.

Sam Tyler, New York City detective is hit by a car in the line of duty and wakes up to find himself in 1973, bell bottoms and all. His goal is to discover 'why'.

Is it to put to rest the demons of his childhood? Is it to save his fiancé played by Lisa Bonet from future harm? Is it to intervene in the life of female cop Annie Norris, nicknamed 'no nuts' by the precinct cops and played by Gretchen Moll?

While doing some online research about the show I stopped into a chat room on abc.go.com. Many viewers are saying this show is sure to become a 'classic'.

The other big topic is, 'where were you in 1973?'

I was nine years old in 1973. This show does a great job at contrasting the vast differences in technology, fashion, language, women's rights, race, music, hairstyles,(feathered wings anyone?) and much more.

The drama takes place during the Vietnam War, at a time when moral codes and political beliefs now seem as strange as cell phones and computers would have been 35 years ago.

The main character, Sam Tyler is played by Irish born actor Jason O'Mara. O'Mara was born in Dublin, attended Trinity College and has been working with a dialect coach to nail his New York accent for the show. O'Mara stars alongside well known actors Harvey Keitel and Michael Imperioli.

Life on Mars is nostalgic, humorous, and engaging. If you love a great story, don't miss it. If you need to catch up Check out episode recaps on abc.go.com. Something else we would not have imagined possible in 1973!

All I know is that I am captivated and so are many others. The next episode does not air until January 28th which leaves lead character Sam Tyler standing on the phone at a cabin in the woods being told to 'go down to the basement'. I cannot believe I have to wait so long to find out what is down there!
