Life is Not Particularly Kind to Anyone

So it's been a while since I last saw you
And you don't really look the same
But I suppose that is the way it goes
Your children make you tired
And the job takes away your soul
And the marriage didn't work out like you had planned
You kept your secrets to yourself
The pain and the despair
And even though you needed someone to lean on
You never asked
You were too embarrassed
You thought that maybe these things only happened to you
But that's not the case at all
Life is not particularly kind to anyone
Sometimes things are trivial
And sometimes it's much worse
But sadness is the unfortunate side
Of being happy
Not every day is blissful
If it were, we'd never have much to look forward to
So you've hit a rough patch in life
but things will be okay
and when you need someone to talk to
don't ever hesitate to call on me
because life has not always been kind to me either
and I've learned that pain and misery don't last too long
when you've got people around you who care.
