Life, Take it One Day at a Time

One Day at a Time

Kurt Evans
In Alcoholics Anonymous we learn to take life one day at a time. When it comes to alcohol, I've heard it often said that it comes down to one day, one hour, one minute, and one second at a time. Every second without alcohol, is a new opportunity at life, for the alcoholic who suffers from alcoholism.

Addiction

As alcoholics, we know, all too well the grip that the addiction to alcohol can have over us. The craving for alcohol can make you leave your friends, family, and home in the pursuit to get drunk.

Insanity Of Alcoholism

The insanity of alcoholism is that when we're stuck in it, we get drunk over and over again expecting a different result every time.

Experience With Alcohol

In my experience with alcohol, no matter how much alcohol I drank, I always wound up puking my guts out somewhere or in a blackout, without the ability to remember where I've been or what I've done.

One Day At A Time

When alcoholics take life one day at a time, it's manageable. If we have to break it down even further to stop ourselves from freaking out and taking a drink of alcohol, we can take it one hour at a time, one minute at a time, and one second at a time. If you say that you're not going to drink alcohol this second, then each second eventually adds up to a minute, each minute eventually adds up to an hour, each hour eventually adds up to a day, each day eventually adds up to a week, each week eventually adds up to a month, each month eventually adds up to a year, and so on.

Life, Take It One Day At A Time

Life, take it one day at a time and don't stress the small stuff. For an alcoholic, everything is huge because when, we; were actively drinking alcohol, we would use anything as an excuse to get drunk.

An Excuse To Get Drunk

If the mail was late, then that was a good excuse to get drunk. When, we; were a practicing alcoholic, it didn't matter what it was. We could use any reason as an excuse to get drunk.

Perception Of The World Around You

Alcohol takes away your ability to reason and affects your perception of the world around you. I know that for me, alcohol would give me the courage to do the things that I wouldn't normally do. Alcohol would also make me do things that were sheer stupidity.

Drunken Behavior

As an example, there was one time when I was out with some friends at a bar, which was right next to the freeway. After we came out of the bar, it was snowing and there was about two inches of snow on the ground. Everybody else gets in the car and starts to make their way out of the parking lot. In my drunken behavior, I run out onto the freeway and get on the ground; and start to make snow angels in the snow. My friends; eventually convince me to get in the car with them so they can take me home.

Life

Remember; life, take it one day at a time and it won't seem so stressful. Everything can be broken down into smaller steps along the way.

Acceptance

I've reached a degree of acceptance within myself. I know that I'm an alcoholic and that I can never take a drink of alcohol.

Taking it one day at a time makes it a less daunting task.

Thanks for sharing -- I'm sure your writings will be an encouragement to many others that they, too can be sober if they take it one day at a time.

Good for you, Kurt. One day at a time is sometimes the only way to live life. For me, God has provided me the encouragement to know when I step from this life, I will step into the everlasting one! Cheers.
