Life with Two Babies

Alyssa Ast
Shortly into my journey of motherhood I had a truly trying moment in parenting. My oldest son, Micheal had just turned 19 months old and my newest son, Alix was only 1 month old. On one of our first outings as a family of four we had to make a quick stop to our insurance agent. After deciding it would not be worth the hassle to drag both babies out of the car, I decided to wait in the car with the boys. We had only been waiting a few minuets when Micheal started crying for something to drink. As I turned around to get my son a juice box out of the diaper bag, a foul odor slapped in in the face from the back set.

Since there was no changing table available in the car I decided it would be best to change Alix on the driver's seat. I handed my oldest son Micheal his juice box and walked around to the other side of the car to get my newborn out to change him. After unbuckling his car seat I began to lift him out when I felt something hot and slimy on my hands. The terrible cause of the stench in his diaper had slipped out through his cloths and was all over the car seat.

I place him on the driver's seat and began to remove the pooped stained cloths and rotten diaper as I heard Micheal is the back seat began to scream at the top of his lungs. While in the middle of changing the baby's diaper, I lifted my head to look back at him to see what the problem was while I held the babies legs up.

Micheal had squirted the juice box all over the back of the car and was screaming as loud as he possibly could because he was soaking wet in juice and had some stuck in his eye. While my head was turned, my infant in the drivers seat was not finished doing his business and since his legs was elevated it squirted out all over the driver's side of the car. It was all over the seat, the car door, and even my pants!

Now besides my oldest son screaming at the top of his lungs in the back seat, I now had the newborn shrieking in anger because he was laying in a huge mess. I was trying to quickly clean up my youngest so I could run to the aid of my oldest, which just angered both of them, making them scream louder. As people walked by the car staring at me like I was a horrible mother for letting my children scream like that I realized my first parenting moment with two young children. The thought quickly sunk in, this was not the joys of motherhood I was hoping for and maybe I had gotten in over my head.
