Life is Unpredictable

Joyce Bocek
The couple referred to in this article worked for many years and earned a six-figure income between them. They didn't have children, but lavished their affection on their two dogs. They lived as cheaply as possible. They didn't allow themselves to take vacations, go out to dinner or even go to the movies.

They were saving their money so they could travel when they retired, which was only five years away. Then they would buy a nice recreational vehicle and tour the country. They wanted to visit Europe, too. That was their dream. In their eyes, it was worth their while to live frugally now.

One day the husband, John, went out walking. It was a blustery day, but John enjoyed challenging the wind. Suddenly, he received a crushing blow hard enough to knock him down. He was bleeding. A metal roof had blown off the top of a shed. When he attempted to get up, he could not. He felt disoriented and was in pain.

A kind stranger stopped and attempted to help John, but was not able to do so. He called 911 from his cell phone and stayed with John until paramedics arrived. He asked John for his name, and whether someone should be notified that he had been injured. John was unable to speak, although his lips were moving.

John broke his leg during his fall and suffered a severe blow to his head. His leg healed, but he was never the same in the head after the injury.

Needless to say, he was forced into an early retirement and Sally, his wife, decided to quit her job so she could take care of him.

Their dreams of traveling were not going to be realized, after all.

On a simpler plane, you might be saving your best china for special occasions, or have a favorite outfit that's been hanging in the closet for five years because you feel too dressed up to wear it. Don't wait too long - life is unpredictable.

Treat today as a special day. Use that good china, wear that special outfit. If you have your life, your health -enjoy it! I'm not saying I advocate squandering your resources, however, I do advocate enjoying what you have while you can!

Yesterday is a memory. Tomorrow is a dream. Today is a gift, that's why it's called the present.
