Light Therapy - an Effective Alternative Treatment to Beat Depression

Let the Power of Light Help You Overcome the Blues

Nowadays many people do not think twice about taking medicines or popping a pill to cure what ails them, but is that always the best answer? Take depression for example. There are some powerful antidepressants available and there is a big business marketing these types of products. Medicines and pills, however, may not always be the best option treatment for people battling with depression. Light Therapy is a new and innovative treatment that is now available and is effectively helping people overcome their depression.

Light Therapy may not be for everyone but people suffering from ailments such as Seasonal Affective Disorder have found it to be very useful and it has also become popular as a treatment for other depression-related conditions.

This is because light has great effects on the hormone melatonin and also serotonin production. These hormones are produced from the effects of darkness and when there is lack of light. Melatonin is a hormone that is responsible for Seasonal Affective Disorder. This type of therapy helps your body to be coordinated with the light and remain same throughout your life phase.

One of the first treatments for light therapy for depression was the dawn simulator which would provide a more intense light on you as you wake up. The simulation is very realistic and like what you would expect for brightness during the summer. It acts as a gentler form of waking you up.

Those people who have some problems with winter's weaker light and shorter days finds that light treatment therapy helps them to wake up in happier mood and with a calmer demeanor.

Using a light box is also one of the light therapies used to treat depression and it includes white light boxes, blue light boxes, and green light boxes. White and blue boxes are very popular these days.

Based on the body's melatonin cycle, these are used during the morning hours to regulate the body's circadian rhythm. Blue light therapy is considered very small and portable, but works same as white light. You just have to place the lights above your head and you do not have to stress your eyes on the light, but just relax while sitting during treatment.

There are some of the potential minor side effects some people experience from too much exposure with the light such as headaches and itchy eyes, but these are minimal when compared to other treatments for depression. Overall, Light Therapy is very good treatment alternative for all those people who want to keep away from medicines to treat their depression. The lights are inexpensive and they do not cause any harm.
