Lighten Up

Linda Galok
It can be a state of understanding or awareness. It surrounds us and envelops us in its brilliance. It represents the renewal of life. It's the brightness of hope. It's the soft glow of romance. It's the violet gleam of twilight. It peeks into the bedroom in the morning. It lulls you to sleep at night. It can keep you healthy. It beckons you to go. It warns you to stop. It answers your prayers. It shows the way. It makes things grow. It radiates warmth. It twinkles, it glistens, it blazes, it shines. It sparkles, it softens, it heals, it defines. It can lighten your mood. It can tickle your fancy. It exudes a life of it's own. It's light.

Light has the ability to provide everything from warmth and security to fascination and awe. From the blaze of a fireplace to the glow of a candle to the brilliance of aurora borealis to the sparkle and radiance of a fireworks display in the night sky, it inspires and comforts.

Almost every religion uses it in ceremony as a form of welcome or renewal or hope. Feng Shui uses it to generate yang (positive) energy in a room. Hearing "twilight's last gleaming" might bring your hand to your heart and "you light up my life" a tear to your eye. We each carry our own light.

You can diffuse it, direct it, or make it dance but you can't truly define it. From the stars in the sky to the light in your child's eye, light can enhance your life and expand your imagination, illuminating the positive and brightening the negative.

Celebrate the brilliance of light in your life.

Chase a rainbow.

Punch holes in a lampshade.

Tell a scary story in the dark with a flashlight under your chin.

Turn on a strobe light and listen to 80's music.

Put blue bulbs in the bedroom and pink in the bathroom.

Change all the light bulbs to stained glass bulbs on Sundays.

Stuff multicolored Christmas lights into an empty wine bottle and plug it in.

String white pearl lights around all your mirrors.

Eat breakfast by candlelight.

Turn off the TV and study a lava lamp.

Drive your cats crazy with a laser light.

Buy a night light in the shape of an angel.

Take a ride at night and notice the warm blue glow and the melting shades of gold through a filmy lace curtain.

Park at the top of a hill over a city on a rainy night and turn your windshield wipers off.

Join the Points of Light Foundation

Have your aura read.

Tour a lighthouse.

Notice the moon.

Catch a firefly.

Lighten up.

Remember the genie is the magical granter of wishes. And he lives in the lamp.

I read more than I clean house, laugh more than I cry, and cook as infrequently as I can get away with it. I'm an obsessive-compulsive wiseass, my favorite color is Hershey, and I believe in angels. But I'...  View profile
