1. The Bodie Island Lighthouse is located within the Cape Hattaras National Seashore, and is over 200 years old. It is located on the sound side of Highway 12 and is between Nag's Head and Oregon Inlet. It is not open to the public for climbing; however there is a visitor's center that features a bookstore and exhibits. There is also a self-guided nature trail. The Bodie Island Lighthouse is open year round.
2. The Cape Hattaras Lighthouse has the distinction as being the tallest in the United States at 208 feet high. It is constructed of brick. Due to erosion, the lighthouse was moved in 1999, back from its original location. This lighthouse is open for climbing from mid-April through Columbus Day-there is a nominal fee of $3.00 for children and seniors, and $6.00 for adults. Also, there are exhibits and a visitor's center open year round. A picnic area and nature trail are located nearby.
3. The Carrituck Beach Lighthouse is located on the northern Outer Banks in Corolla, and is unpainted. The night beacon was automated in 1939, and it still flashes at 20 second intervals to serve as a warning to ships. This lighthouse boasts a Victorian style "keeper's house" and museum shop. It may be climbed for a nominal fee and is open from spring to late autumn.
4. The Ocracoke Lighthouse is located in the small fishing village of Ocracoke, and is one of the oldest operating lighthouses on the United States Eastern shore. It is also the shortest lighthouse on the North Carolina Coast at only 75 feet tall. It has a white-washed appearance. The Ocracoke Lighthouse has survived many hurricanes and shines 14 miles out to sea.
5. The Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is small and the newest lighthouse of the Outer Banks. Actually, it does not even have the appearance of a lighthouse, but more of a light-keeper's house. It is located on the Manteo Waterfront Pier, and has information on the lighthouse and its keepers, as well as other exhibits.
This summer, be sure to schedule a day trip to see these unique lighthouses during your Outer Banks Vacation. It will be educational for your entire family.
