Like the Beasts of the Fields

Prophecy for a King

Debby Alten
In the midst of the Land
A mighty tree
Its height . . .
Touches the sky
Leaves of splendor
Fruit abundant
Shelter . . .
For the beasts of the field

From the vastness of heaven
A holy one
Mighty in stature
Shouts . . .
Cut down the tree
Trim off it branches
Strip off it leaves
Scatter the fruit
Flee . . .
All ye beasts of the field

**But let the stump and its roots
Bound with iron and bronze
Remain in the ground
In the grass of the field

O king of Babylon
Drenched with heaven's dew
Your mind . . .
Like the beasts of the fields
Surely they will humble you
Till seven times has passed
Till you, O king, says Belteshazzar
Acknowledge the Most High

Renounce your wickedness
Do what is right
Deliver the oppressed
Or forever dwell . . .
With the beasts of the fields

In the midst of the Land
A mighty king
Your greatness
Touched the sky
Clothed in splendor
Feasts abundant
Your kingdom
Has fallen . . .
To the beasts of the fields
