Eager to begin a new day
The first day
of the rest of my life
My first day
without you
My first day
as both mother and father
My first day
as sole support to our children
emotionally and physically
My first day
as head of the household
my first day alone
My heart has seen better days
It cannot be broken
having never been whole
I miss the familiarity that is you
I miss your voice
and knowing you are going to be here after dinner.
I miss knowing there is someone
to make up for my slack
To fix what I mess up
To agree when I make sense
To laugh with
Today is the first day
of the rest of our lives
and you're not in it.
The kids and I carry on
Being us
Being a family
Attempting to be happy
It's the first day
but the space in our lives
where you used to be
seems like a dark oppressive void
that cannot be filled
or ignored
but we must
because you left
This morning brings reckoning
determination
resolve
I distract the children
with our own personal sunrise.
The new colors
the peaceful light
the possibilities.
The first day of the rest of our lives
like a new day dawning.
