Like a Tiny Splinter

like a tiny splinter
in the very end of my finger,
there is an unending burn in my soul
i can't dig it out,
it's invisible to my eyes
it's just a piece of something
i once had,
nothing grand, nothing new,
nothing i can use, but it just won't go away....
i woke up with this all too familiar ache,
and i started my day,
trying to work around the pain
the splinter in my soul is the memory of you...
and there is nothing i can do.
