Lil Rounds on "American Idol:" Oh, Oh, Do We Have Trouble in Idol City?

Talented Lil Rounds Reamed for Sound-alike Tina Turner Version of "What's Love Got to Do with It?"

Connie Wilson
Lil Rounds, one of only two women remaining in "American Idol" was soundly drubbed in her appearance on April 7, 2009. Singing songs from the year the contestant was born, Lil's choice, based on her October 20, 1984, birth date in Memphis, Tennessee, was Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It?"

Lil looked great, especially her hair, and the judges acknowledged this, but she received some of the harshest criticism of the night, primarily for what Simon has dubbed, in the past, a "sound-alike" factor. Said Simon, "We're not looking for a second or third rate version of Tina turner. You're not making the impact. You have to take a song and make it original."

Randy seconded this, saying, "You are mad, mad talented (but) it's almost like you're not listening to us." He added, "It's not clicking right now."

Simon added a sarcastic, "Overall, it's quite good news," when it was anything but.

Paula was in agreement with the criticisms of Simon and Randy, saying, "You needed to lead Ricky (Minor) and the band into creating your own niche."

It would be a shame to lose Lil Rounds at this stage of the competition, with 8 contestants remaining. She is deserving of being in the top 7, even if her song choices have not thrilled the judges lately and her interpretations have been dubbed too much like the original. The girl is undeniably more vocally talented than Scott MacIntyre, for example, but will she be voted off? Stay tuned Wednesday on Fox to find out. (See my article rating all the competitors to see who I think may go and who may stay.)

Well, "David," I am a classically trained pianist (22 years) who once played "Rhapsody in Blue" with a Symphony Orchestra, and played 3 other instruments (oboe being one). Furthermore, as I write this on May 9th, my judgment has been pretty much "right on" to date. Scott was a nice guy, and I applaud his courage, but he did not have any more raw talent than Lil Rounds, even if he had more "training." (And the word is spelled "definitely.")

I'm in Cancun (Mexico) posting this from my time share balcony, and I could only read the very first part of this comment that said Lil (Rounds) should have 'went' (sic) home a long time ago. I disagree. First of all, it is "gone" home, and second of all, Lil is a talented "belter" who has, quite simply, not found her turf yet. She is the mother of 3 kids and certainly one of the 3 most talented female vocalists in this year's competition (the others are Allison Iraheta and Alexis Grace, who is long gone). I am happy to report that my sentiments that Scott (MacIntrye was really the one who should be cut came true.)
